Today, I began thinking about addicts and began questioning if after their initial use(which is mortal), they are guilty after penance. They aren’t right in the head once they try a particularly addictive drug so would they have full consent. I guess this also applies to sex addicts in the sense that they try and try to stop but keep falling when they repent.

It is one thing to be in an addiction and struggle with God’s grace to overcome it. It is another thing just to settle complacently in an addiction and do nothing to overcome it.

Whether it is a mortal sin is for Jesus to decide, there are many circumstances that are left unsaid by your post that need to be taken into account.

To a person in an addiction and struggling with it, having frequent recourse to the Sacraments is a must to overcoming it as well as praying for the grace of God to overcome that addiction.
