Is there a list of what constitutes a mortal or a venial sin? Would it be in something like ‘Catholicism for dummies’ (which I still haven’t got!)😃 Or is there an online resource?

Take a look at the Catechism of the Catholic Church which is online from the vatican website, you can google it. You can go to the section which deals with the distinction between mortal and venial sins and in the section under the commandmants of God it lists mortal sins which are against these commandments.

857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.”
So, for a sin to be mortal, you have to have full knowledge that what you are doing is a grave sin, and you chose to do it anyway.
