How is the distinction between mortal and venial sins viewed in the Eastern Catholic (EC) churches. From my understanding, within Roman Catholicism (RC) a clear distinction is made between what is mortal and what is venial, whereas it appears that Eastern Orthodox (EO) do not try to define the difference between mortal and venial. What is the EC stance on this?

Eastern Orthodox are more likely to view the distinction as a cause for division (though certainly not all).

Eastern and Oriental Catholics view the distinction as a legitimate expression of the Faith once for all delivered to the Saints peculiar to the Latin Church.

Mardukm: if your Oriental tradition does not define mortal and venial sin, how would you understand St John’s Biblical teaching that there is sin that leads to death and sin that does not lead to death?

Dear brother Tyler,

We recognize that there are levels of seriousness of sin, reflected in the penance. We simply don’t use the terms.

I think anyone who uses this issue as a cause for disunity is either invincibly ignorant or has the spirit of factiousness.
