Mortification

oh yeah
there is a steady stream of people in and out of my office, plus sundry letters and emails, letting me know what I have done wrong lately, how I have muffed my job, and i can also lie awake at night reviewing my lapses and offenses, so I get quite enough mortification, thank you very much.

Like every Catholic of appropriate age and reasonable health should, I fast and abstain on the days decreed by the Church - that’s one form of mortification most all Catholics do.

As for other forms - well, I’m abstaining from chocolate full-time for a few months for a particular intention. I do love my chocolate, so it’s a good form of mortification for me.

Then there’s little things like not always taking pain killers for a headache, instead offering it up.

Let’s also be aware of the interior mortifications - of the will, of the intellect, of the tongue…

For example:

Not having to have the last word
Not saying the clever comment that’s on the tip of your tongue
Not pointing out another’s error that really doesn’t matter
Not giving in to curiosity
Not making excuses for one’s mistakes
Not having to appear the expert - letting another make a point similar to yours without interrupting and adding to it
Punctuality

I, as a person who thinks she knows everything, find these quite difficult.

We keep the heat down to save money, and we keep the a/c off most of the summer. Do we need to? Not really.
But I hate to be too hot or too cold, so I “offer it up.”

That’s nothing compared to what I’ve read here, but the first thing that comes to mind.
