There are active and passive mortifications…and even internal and external mortifications.
Active we choose…walking up stairs, rather than taking an elevator.
Passive are presented to us…red lights…flat tires…weather, moved deadlines. If we take them in a sporting spirit, offering them as a sacrifice…then they could be considered a mortification. Are they accepted as the will of God…are they accepted with a sporting spirit, with joy?
Pushing away interior complaint…or love of comfort.
Some actual examples.
Smiling when you don’t want to.
Working a few minutes longer…a little bit better…offering the effort in conversation with God
Cooler showers, shorter showers.
No seconds at meals, leaving a bit of food, drinking water not soda or beer.
Not taking a second glance at an attractive woman…maybe offering the effort to God for the safety of all women…all pregnant women…all unborn children.
Pushing away the Internet.
Holding your opinion when it’s not absolutely necessary
Getting up a bit earlier, or with a bit more spark.
