Hi there,

I am learning about the Mosaic covenant which was instituted in Exodus at Mt. Sinai.
I have also heard that Deuteronomy (i.e. the ‘second law’) contains some laws that God does not approve of, e.g. divorce, and was given due to Israel’s hard heart.

Therefore, is Deuteronomy seperate from the Mosaic covenant? Or did God update the Mosaic covenant with the Deuteronomic covenant?

Thanks!

Judaism considers Deuteronomy a composite or summary of the previous four books of the Torah (Written Law). It is not separate and not a second law; on the contrary, it is regarded as the essence of the Law.

Hi friend, all that aside doesn’t it contain some laws that God does not approve of?

E.g. polygamy, etc.

Isn’t this what the prophet Ezekiel alludes to when he says “Therefore I also gave them statutes that were not good, and judgments, in which they shall not live.” in Ezekiel 20:25.

Didn’t God allow this because of Israel’s past hard heart and unwillingness to obey the commandments?

So yes, Deuteronomy is not separate but could be seen as an ‘update’ on Leviticus, Exodus and Numbers - due to the fact Deuteronomy contains some laws which are not part of God’s perfect will.
