Hi!

I am planning to post on a Muslim forum on this topic and would like some thoughts from members of the Catholic Answers Forum first. Does anyone here know what Mulism believe about Moses? I know he is considered a prophet… Is that any different from what we as Catholics and Christians understand him to be. What does the Kuran say about the 10 commandments he received from God? Do they recognize the same wording as we do? Do they recognize the name of God given Moses at the burning bush, “I Am Who Am?” There is another thread going right now arguing that Mohammed didn’t live by the 10 Commandments, but I am not interested in this topic. I simply want to know what Muslims believe happended between Moses and God and what Moses in turn did for us or called us to by their reconning. Perhaps Muslims really are living out what they have been told really happened with Moses, and we are arguing the wrong stuff with them, like arguing apples and oranges.

Thanks for your responses.

In order to understand the significance of the Ten Commandments in relation to the Qur’an, we need to bear in mind the following hadith:

Abu Huraira reports that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:

"My position, in relation to the prophets who came before me, can be explained in the following example: ‘A man erected a building and adorned his edifice with great beauty, but he left an empty niche in the corner, where just one brick was missing. People looked around the building and marveled at its beauty, but wondered why a brick was missing from that niche! I am like unto that one missing brick and I am the last in line of the prophets.’" (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim.)

Therefore, the Message that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) brought is only a continuation of the revelations brought by earlier Prophets and the deen (way of life) of Islam has been completed and is perfect in the eyes of God as told in Surah 5:3 of the Qur’an:

"This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."

The Ten Commandments were revealed to Prophet Moses (pbuh) as a divine guide for the ancient Israelites and they have since been superseded by the Qur’an which has been revealed for all of humankind.

And although the Ten Commandments, which are indeed found in the Qur’an, were adequate at the time of Prophet Moses (pbuh), they were rudimentary and they have since been refined to suit the needs of all of humankind till the time when world comes to an end and these refined divine laws are now found in the Qur’an which is the Last Testament of the Lord.

If you don’t have an idea what they understand about any of the Biblical prophets then I suggest reading first, even if it takes a few months, of their texts and then going in a Muslim forum. Or you will be fooled just like there is one muslim here on this forum posing as a Christian and many have been fooled.

I can tell you my experiences with Muslims on their forums and it isn’t pleasant. You have to be extraordinarily careful not to appear as prostylitizing too. They don’t like it in their communities nor their forums. I couldn’t handle it for too long and I have been studying Islam for a long time. It wasn’t so much they were nasty (many are - so be prepared for that in varying degrees. Some are nasty in the foul sense and others are just nasty in character if they think you are there to convert them), but others will try to overwhelm you with a lot of verbage.

Their versions of all the Biblical prophets are skewed. Muhammad used them to try to justify his Islam. Sometimes he just didn’t know the original stories so he would make things up. There are a lot of contradictions. That is another thing to read about - all the contradictions between the Bible and Quran. Some of them are in regards to Moses too. Just do some web searches on your own. All you have to do is take that information and then read it for yourself to find the contradictions.

The Quran is hard to read because there is no logical order to it. It is mostly just ramblings and phrases plucked out of air. To know the history behind some of them is helpful. It is why some say that it is good to know the Hadith. Bukhari is the best, with Muslim who was Bukhari’s student, comes in a close 2nd. Be prepared for Muslims to deny the Hadith too if it isn’t what they want to read or hear.

As you can read in Hamba’s post, they think that all the prophets of the Bible were of Islam. That is complete hooey, but that is what they are told.

Personally I find educating our own much more rewarding. And be prepared for bashing there too since many still think that Islam is peaceful. go figure - most of the wars around the world involve Muslims and no outrage from them. They work on us trying to sway our thinking about Islam instead of those they tell us are misunderstanding Islam. They don’t do anything to stop the violence and we catch hate literature in their mosques or if we read their Sharia laws we find that the violence is very much ok in Islam. Sharia laws are based on the Quran and sunnah. Sharia laws are the antithesis to freedom and tolerance for anyone who is not a Muslim or Muslim women.

Dear qwerk,

Thanks for your response to my post. I want to discuss faith and religion with our Muslim brothers because I am convinced that if they will study the truth about both Catholicism and Islam, they will come to a conclusion not unlike mine. I have come to believe that getting them to face the evidence may be very diffucult. I take you have had a similar experience.

Might I referr you to Catholic Answers Live Radio for a great suggestion in evangelizing Muslims. It seems Fr. Mitch Pacwa was being interview on the topic of Evangelizing Muslims, and a Muslim man called him to discuss an issue, why Christians can’t see the truth and turn to Islam. Fr. Mitch’s response is one of the best I have ever heard in response and illustractes exactly what he was telling us should be our respectful approach. It made a huge impression on me. the web sight is: catholic.com/radio/calendar_search.php. Just go to this sight, type in the title of the program for the day, “Evangelizing Muslims.” Up will pop the archived program for May 21, 2003. It takes about 45 minutes. I hope it will help and inspire you in your efforts with them.

Dear hamba2han,

Thanks for responding to my post. I see that Muhamad (pbua) explained that he was the missing piece to complete the prophetic message sent by Allah (pbua).

The prophets in the Old Testament and the message of Jesus (pbua) all fit together nicely, with nothing replaceing anything that had been revealed before. Jesus (pbua)fulfilled all of the prophesies made in the Old Testament according to the Holy Bible.

Please forgive me for saying, for asking, but the Holy Qur’an says that where a previous prophet’s words contradict what was taught by Muhamad (pbua), we are to disregard the former prophet’s words. This is not an issue for Christians who follow the teachings of Jesus (bpua) as layed out in the Holy Bible. This begs the question, if you will forgive me for asking it, “Why should we believe in a man whose words are from Allah (pbua), yet contradict many of the words of the previous prophets, when the words and actions of Jesus (pbua) fulfill the words of the previous prophets and never contradict them?” This question begs to be answered. The answer will point to the path which we should follow, will it not? Which prophet shows the consistancy of Allah (pbua), a God who Christians know to be loyal to His people? This is the question to be answered.

In Quran Allah spoke with Moses through “The Fire”, read the full story in (Quran 20:09-46).

And for the Ten Commandments, our fellow hamba2han provided a good link, however, you will also find in Quran & hadith verses which contradict those Commandments…🤷

In general, the Qur’an does NOT contradict the Bible… and the only places where there are major differences between the Bible and the Qur’an are where the Bible actually contradicts itself.

For instance, in the following verses:

Say (O Muhammad): People! I am the Messenger of Allah sent to you all… … (Al-Qur’an, 7:158)

And We have not sent you (O Muhammad) but to the whole of mankind as a giver of glad tidings and a warner, but most people have no knowledge. … (Al-Qur’an, 34:28)

"I was sent ONLY to the lost sheep of Israel" … (Matthew 15:24)

Muslims have no problem at all in accepting the truth of all 3 verses above.

On the other hand, it is Christians who are saying that none of the 3 verses above is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I would say that knowledgeable Muslims would have more faith in the ‘face value’ truth of the Bible than most Christians.

And many people reject Jesus but He didn’t say to go out and kill them, enslave them or subjugate them and make their lives hellish. Muhammad did say to do those things if we reject him.

Ironic you mention Matthew 15:24, **and if you read on the woman persisted in convincing Jesus that her faith in Him was strong. And Matthew 15:28 Then Jesus said to her in reply," O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed from that hour. **

I suspect that leaving out the rest of it was very convenient. 🤷 the difference between the Bible and the Quran is that the Bible tells stories about events, and parables, and they have a beginning - middle - and an end. The Quran does not have that. They are disjointed phrases that require the hadith or Islamic history to back them up.

I don’t have that gift to do that. I tell the truth and my goal is more to make sure they don’t pass any untruths and to teach our own, and to learn from everyone and also my mistakes.

But, I will listen to that program because even if I am not out to evangelize them, I still can probably learn something.

What I wrote in my first post still stands though. I can tell you that it is very difficult in face to face encounters not only with them who are masters at deflecting off of themselves back onto others, or claim they are being misunderstood, or that the violent ones are misunderstood, or Christians are much more violent, and the list goes on and on. And it is difficult with our own.

From both you need to get into your head that you will be bashed like you have never been bashed before. It is easy for me to write while sitting behind a computer that they are just projecting themselves onto me, but face to face - it is much harder.

What I do when faced with the initial response of unbelief is that I am a racist (they love that one, plus Islamophobe, which is a joke to me since Islam is not a race and Islamophobe is a fear of Islam which is nonsense) is just hope that I have just startled them into having to get their heads out of the sand. The sunlight is bright and can hurt the eyes when they have to take them out of darkness. that is the first stage, and the second stage and thereafter - they will start to realize that what I told them was the truth. It seems to be a normal human response to bash the messenger.

I have read interviews from Father Botros and have seen how respectful he is and he not only gets bashed, but death threats. Delving into the world of Islam is not an easy task. Evangelizing anything other than Islam is prohibited in their laws. And I don’t know how long you will stay on a website before being banned. It might be interesting - come back and tell us how you fare.

Dear qwerk,

I appreciate your thoughts on discussions with Muslims. I am of the belief of my Grandmother, who was Protestant and the granddaughter of a Pioneer family. She used to say, “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegre.” The bible says that we are to love our enemies, and by loving our neighbor, we are loving Christ. As I don’t always know if the one who is being nice to me as a friend is really a friend or an enemy in disguise, or vise versa, I simply choose to love both friend and enemy and trust Jesus to cover my back should my caution not be enough to protect me. I used to post on the CARM boards for years and found our Protestant brothers to be pretty viscious, so I am not afraid of what can happen on discussion boards. I know that the truth will unite all of us one day, and if God can use me to make some of that truth clear now, then Glory and Praise to our God. Amen!!!

Dear hamba2han,

Thank you for your reply. I like that you are posting both from the Qur’an and the Holy Bible. This gives me something solid to think on.

You seem to be insinuating here that the Holy Bible is saying that Jesus was sent only to the Jewish people, not all of humanity, and that Muhamad was sent to all of humanity. Forgive me for suggesting that perhaps the verse of Matthew 15:24 might have a different meaning for you if read it with verses 21 to 28 of chapter 15. If you do not have a Holy Bible with you and would like to read this for yourself, bring up “Bible Gateway” on the internet and look up the chapter and verses - 15:21-28. The Catholic Church teaches that the 12 Apostles were all Jewish and so were raised to believe that Jews were the chosen people, an elite nation set apart from the rest of the world for the favor of Allah. Jesus wanted to make a point to them. So when the women, desparate and full of faith, came pleading to him for help, Jesus gave her the standard Jewish belief by saying, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel,” basically saying to her to go away and leave him alone, since she was not Jewish and so not privilaged with his attention or assistance. Her persistance revealed her faith, a faith that clearly was not found but only rarely anywhere amongst the “chosen” people called Jews. The point here was to teach the Apostles that any person of any peoples from anywhere on the face of the earth could have a passionate and fierce faith, not just Jews. Do you agree that such a faith can be found outside of the Jewish community, my brother hamba2han?

The next act of Jesus packed in a potent message also for Jesus’ apostles to learn, a message which eventually took them across the earth from Europe to North Africa, throughout the Middle east, Western Asia to the borders of China and even into India. That message was made clear when Jesus said, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done to you as you desire.” And the Holy Bible then tells us that at that very moment, the woman’s daughter who was possessed in a location not nearby was healed. The message here is that Jesus DID come for more than just the Jews. He came for ALL people of faith from every nation on earth. There is more on this in other parts of the Holy Bible. When one really studies the Holy Bible not by the verses, but as a whole, one verse in context with its story, and each story in context with all the rest of the Holy Scriptures, one finds that the Holy Bible does not contradict itself. Rather, what appears as contradition actually sheds light on the full body of truth so there is nothing left ambiguous.

Dear hamba2han, I invite you to open a Holy Bible and look especially at all the contraditions you have been shown by other Muslim brothers, then go to the Catholic Church and seek with persistance anyone who can clear up the contradictions. I assure you that each and every one can be cleared up without fail, though it may take time to find the person’s who have cared enough about Allah to really study and learn their Christian faith. If in fact you have been given permission to study the Holy Bible to see for yourself, or to challange you own Islamic faith, then I issue this challange of persistant questioning. I have come to know the Christian faith as a very beautiful, loving faith in a loving God and I know that many others for over 2000 years have found it to be so, too.

Thank you for sharing your faith with me and dialoguing with me. What do you think about my explanation? Was it helpful? Do you still understand Matthew 15:24 to be a contradiction in the Holy Bible?

Sincerely,

Jack Catholic

Thank you

Many Protestants think that Catholics are not Christians, or they are warped in some way. Like praying to Mary or using a lot of statues. I don’t know - I say that if they read the prayer they would read it as a prayer to Mary to intercede for them. I guess it is a sort of “she has Jesus’ ear and can put in a good word for them” sort of thing. It does no harm. And the statue thing, well most of those are just plaster and paint, some are of wood. If the statues get destroyed the Catholics still carry on. I think that the Protestants need to worry about themselves instead of everyone else. But like I said about Islam it is not above criticism. (though too many think it is or confuse it with the people)

I hear that ‘love your enemy’ all the time and am quite familiar with it. It seems that many forget all the other passages in the Bible and think that forwarding Islam’s untruths are ok in that ‘love your enemy’ line. It is not. I do not accuse you of that, I am just writing what my experiences have been. And one recent experience of that sort of thing with a guy on this forum but I won’t go into it. I will not put pbuh’s behind anyone like Muhammad. period. It ain’t gonna happen! If that is ‘vinegar’ vs ‘honey’ so be it.

I just posted about a whole bunch of things on a different thread that Muhammad did and I can tell you that guy was bad.

Jack Catholic, I just started listening to it - I am about 16 minutes into it and had no idea that they think that the Fatherhood of God is offensive, and difficult to understand that His love for us, in their mentality, is something of the sexual. They will not attribute the sexual to God, but neither do we!

I think my eyes crossed with that concept. Anyway, I have to interrupt the broadcast until I get back. I just wanted to thank you - it is very enlightening so far.

Dear brother qwerk,

Hey, I’m glad you are listening to that radio program about Islam. There are a few others: “The tenets & Principles of Islam” aired on March 8, 2002, and “Islam and Jihad” aired on January 3, 2007. There was aparently one also called “Islam and Jihad” aired on April 16, 2010 in which a guy different from the first guy was interviewed.

Hey, I got to thinking that I didn’t know what (pbuh) meant, and perhaps I shouldn’t be using what I didn’t know anything about. Do you know what it means?

Talk to you later, and God Bless,

Jack Catholic

It means ‘peace be upon him’. On websites that I am not restricted, or on Facebook, I have used other words that begin with a ‘p’. 😃

It is used by Muslims all the time and I was told it is one of those things that help to balance their imaginary scales. I do believe I heard about the scales thing from Walid Shoebat, but I don’t remember the video or when. It has been awhile since I saw that video and I don’t remember all of it.

It is annoying as all get out when you got to labour through their articles and they got that inserted all over the place.

"I was sent ONLY to the lost sheep of Israel" … (Matthew 15:24)
Jack Catholic provided a good point regarding that, and I would add that Jesus pre-crucifixion was for the Jews only, and post-crucifixion He is for all nations, else the other nations wouldn’t believe Christianity if the mother of all miracles (the resurrection) didn’t happen.

The actions and deeds of someone MUST agree and tally with his words in order for him to have any form of credibility as a righteous person.

In the case of Prophet Jesus (pbuh), he said that he was sent only for the lost sheep of Israel and he did indeed pick all of his disciples from this nation that he said that he was sent to i.e. the lost sheep of Israel… and indeed he did not approach and neither did he preach to any other nation throughout the entire period of his ministry.

In the case of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), he said that he was sent to all of humankind and among his thousands of companions, there were indeed people from many lands like Persia, Rome, Abyssinia etc. as well as from the many tribes of Arabia.

Both of these Messengers of God (peace be upon them) did indeed prove by their actions in appointing and associating with their disciples and companions respectively, their total adherence to the words that are recorded in the verses of Bible and the Qur’an which I have quoted in my previous post.

By their own actions, is there any reason whatsoever for me to doubt their sincerity and truthfulness when Prophet Jesus (pbuh) said that he was sent only for the lost sheep of Israel and when Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said that he was sent for all of humankind?

It is EITHER that we choose to believe the words and actual actions of Jesus (pbuh) when he said that he was sent only for the lost sheep of Israel… OR… we choose to believe in what the Church tells us that he was sent for all of humankind.

For me, the choice is just so easy i.e. I choose to believe in the words and actual actions of Prophet Jesus (pbuh) throughout the entire period of his ministry in proving that he was indeed sent only for the lost sheep of Israel.

and indeed he did not approach and neither did he preach to any other nation throughout the entire period of his ministry.
(Mark 16:15):
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

(Matthew 28:19):
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Picking and chosing what you want to believe is very self-serving. You pick a verse out of context without reading to the end of the story then you chose to believe some sort of a weird meaning to it, but then you ignore parts that show you that Jesus is God, Jesus told you that people like Muhammad are false, that what Muhammad saw that claimed to be Gabriel was nothing but evil because the message was against the message of Jesus, etc.

The Quran has the verses that are disjointed and have no story to them, the Bible does not in many instances and this is one of those instances.

You chose to believe in what is convenient for you to believe in that you skew to try to backup Muhammad. But then I have heard that Muslims think the Bible is corrupted.

Muslims want it both ways. If something can be skewed to their purpose then it is ok, if it cannot then it is corrupted.

I already posted that the faith of the Gentile was so great Jesus blessed her and gave her what she wanted. What would Muhammad have done? Told her to submit and tell her to pay the jizya or join his haram. That is the consistency I see from Muhammad.

From the dedicated research of respected Bible scholars at BibleGateway.com, we can see that there is considerable doubt when it comes to the question of the true mission of Prophet Jesus (pbuh).

((The most reliable early manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do NOT have Mark 16:9-20.))

… And so, which of the following Biblical verses is more likely to be true?

EITHER

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to ALL creation. … Mark 16:15

OR

"I was sent ONLY to the lost sheep of Israel." … (Matthew 15:24)

and also

"These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: 'Do NOT go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel." … (Matthew 10:5-6)

OR

… perhaps Christians are saying that there is NO contradiction between the above Biblical verses found in Mark and Matthew?

It makes absolutely no sense at all that Prophet Jesus (pbuh) would spend the entire period of his ministry preaching to the lost sheep of Israel only and then immediately after his alleged crucifixion orders his disciples to go to all nations and preach to all people.

If the divine message that he brought was intended for all of humankind, then why didn’t he declare it in no uncertain terms right from the beginning of his mission like what Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did?

If I were to accept the Christian explanation that it was all part of the grand strategy of Almighty God, then I would have to conclude that Jesus (pbuh) … and by extension God Himself… intentionally lied when he said “I was sent ONLY to the lost sheep of Israel” in Matthew 15:24.

I just cannot accept that it was necessary for Jesus (pbuh), or any of the Prophets of God (peace be upon them all), to lie or tell half-truths regarding their mission because this is something which clearly breaks one of the Ten Commandments not to bear false witness… and is not the faithful adherence to the Ten Commandments what this thread is all about?

How on earth is it possible that a true Prophet of God will intentionally break any of the Commandments in order to spread the Message of the Lord? 🤷

There is really no doubt whatsoever that Prophet Jesus (pbuh) was indeed sent only to the lost sheep of Israel because this is the only scenario which makes perfectly logical sense.
