Is it true that the inside of mosques usually have a stinky foot oder smell from everyone taking their shoes off. I have read that the blue Mosque in Istanbul (aka Constantinople) is the worst.

Do old houses have stinky foot odor from years of people taking off their shoes inside them?

Seriously, there’s any number of sensible and intelligent questions you could ask, and you come up with this?

Old houses don’t have thousands of people a month taking their shoes off and walking on the carpets. I just have been reading about people who take tours of mosques, and although they are very beautiful on the outside. Their biggest memories is the smell of stinky feet on the inside.

Ever been to Buckingham Palace or the White House? Hundreds if not thousands of staff who DO take their shoes off (they live there, remember) and walk on the carpets, yes.

As Margarete Thatcher once said, “No, no, no!” 🙂 Most mosques I’ve been in smell very nice, even the areas where the shoes are left.

Keep in mind part of Muslim preparation for prayer is washing (also known as wudu). This includes washing the feet.

The Blue Mosque might stink, I haven’t been there. Try visiting a few mosques in your own area and report back to us on the smell you find. 🙂

I’ve been to the Blue Mosque, it doesn’t stink. And it’s very beautiful inside too. 🙂

people who take tours of mosques may be smelled thier own stinky feet , can you imagine the smell of the feet for hundreds of tourists when they suddenly take off thier shoes to make tour in the mosque !!!

my point is that when muslims go to thier mosques for thier salat , they actually perform the ritual ablution before salat (including cleanning of feet) , beside most of them are go directly from thier homes/work to the nearst mosque ( usually it dosn’t make any smell of stinky feet in this matter)

anyway may be the stinky smell is exist within those mosques which opened for tourists all the day , such mosques arn’t open for just muslims prayers 😛

This thread is hilarious!! :rotfl:

Tourists should try flip-flops instead of shoes with socks when going on the tours. They create less stink, haha.

Heh. Maybe I contributed to the alleged stink in the Blue Mosque. After all, I was a tourist going in just after Friday prayers. 😃

Do they use soap. Just using water doesn’t take away the stench.

may be all of us sometimes contributed in such things in some places 😃

my point is that , it isn’t general case in the mosques as the poster tried to suggest , i just trying to analyze the case from my point of view
for me i never visited the blue mosque before 😛

no , i think that bare foot dosn’t need more than water to take away the stench , beside muslims cleans it 5 times a day at least before every prayer

i think that the smell is caused of socks in the first place , not the bare feet

wow , what are we talking about here ? what is the purpose of this thread !

True, and like I said, I never noticed any smell while I was in the Blue Mosque. You should go if you can, it’s gorgeous.

General silliness, I guess. 😛 Hey, I just noticed you’re in Egypt, I spent a semester there a couple years ago. That’s how I ended up in Istanbul over Thanksgiving break.
