I could go on…it would be easier to name the ones that don’t annoy me 😉 .

Justin Timberlake! The guy thinks he’s the coolest thing on the planet. He also claims to be both Buddhist and Christian. Is that even possible?
I was a Buddhist.

In a previous life, anyway. 😃

Most of them, particularly those who claim to be Catholic but who live hedonistic lives. Also those who were Catholic but who now follow scientology.

I think we got the picture. I started to add one who has made blasphemous comments about God and has even called him horrible names which have been quoted in Newsweek as if it was a funny article. Then I thought, my Lord, we are stooping to their level playing the righteous individuals. How many of us have ever prayed for these people. They all really do need serious prayer. Please, lets all agree to pray for them. They as well as we who are “enjoying” this name fest, are in need of prayer.
Prayers & blessings
Deacon Ed B

David Crosby and Bruce Hornsby, who are performing at an Obama Rally.😦

Can someone please explain to me the success of Sarah Jessica Parker? I see two dozen people everyday who are more attractive and talented than her. I’m not gettin’ this.

If some of these celebrities have dabbled with college, or even graduated, it still does not entitle them to the bully pulpit.

So, Susan Sarandon graduated from Catholic University. Did she graduate with honors, or just squeak by? Really, it doesn’t matter to me. I can only hope that she is not claiming to be a practicing Catholic because that would be yet another reason that she is a disgrace.

James Woods has qualified to be a member of Mensa. He may actually have accepted membership. He was offered scholarships to the nation’s best polytechnic institutes, but chose acting instead. None of it entitles his word and opinion to be given more weight than mine, just because he plays pretend for a living.

Truly, most of these celebrities are the morons of the world. Woods may especially be considered a moron, seeing as though he could have used his brain for better purposes, other than putting a large portion of it on automatic pilot and chasing fame, fortune, and status as one of the “beautiful people.”
There’s really no need to be cruel. Acting requires a lot of talent AND hard work, training, and education. It’s a skill just like other skills. It isn’t “playing pretend.” Theater and drama CAN be a very good force in the world and CAN work for social justice and change.

And since when did someone have to be formally educated to be smart?

Silly me. I thought the purpose of theater and drama was to entertain.

No, Sailor Kenshin.

That’s just one purposel of theater and drama. There are lots more. You could start a new thread if you want to discuss it.
See, I thought it was the purpose of the CHURCH to instruct us in matters of morality.

This is only one reason why I find so annoying those loudmouthed celebrities who presume to lecture us about the ‘planet’ and a woman’s so-called right to murder an unborn baby and other marxist dogma.

Actors are told what to say, how to say it, when to say it, what to wear when they say it, where to stand when they say it, what to do when they say it, and so on. Truly, they need to exorcise their emotions, more than their intelligence, to give the writers and directors what they want.

There is very little objectivity or truth in movie and play scripts; this is especially true in works that are designed to call for social awareness or change. Writers of these works use hyperbole and poetic license to advance their cause. Because of people like Michael Moore, viewers can not even turn to documentaries for truth and objectivity.

I don’t believe I make the point that only college-educated people are smart. The point I make is that one does not need much of an education to be an actor. As long as a person can read and memorize lines, he or she has a chance to be successful, because the rest of the acting functions will be provided for them by the director/writer/producer, etc. The fact that Maher and Garofalo failed at acting speaks volumes, as far as I am concerned. Does one need to be convincing in their portrayal of a character? Yes. But that success depends more on the emotional talent than it does on the intellectual acumen. Maher and Garofalo seem like intelligent people. I don’t know them personally, and I don’t agree with them on the political issues, but their implied intelligence has done nothing for their acting careers.

The intelligent James Woods could have done more constructive and worthy things for the world if he used his high IQ and went into the field of science, for example. Again, he earned his choice of scholarships to various polytechnic institutes.

I think what is cruel is when politicians use the popularity of actors to get votes. For some reason, many people in this country put actors high up on a pedestal, and politicians take advantage of this worship of false gods to win elections. People who cast a vote, because a celebrity stood next to a candidate on the stump, really need to take a hard look at how they make decisions in life.

Hollywood is a lie. Special effects, dramatic effect, poetic license, hyperbole, and editing make sure that the objective truth is hard to find. This is why we viewers are told to suspend belief for a few hours if we truly want to be entertained by a movie.

Of course literature can be a tool to bring awareness to an issue. But one can not discount the bias of the author or the agenda he or she tries to push. An objective critical analysis needs to be applied to the author’s theme, and that analysis consists of clearing the smoke to see if there is an objective truth, as opposed to mere moral relevance.

I was going to reply to this thread with a few actors I find particularly annoying because they can’t act/think themselves god. But apparently annoying means “Dares to mention they are not my level of catholic/christian” so…

None of them. Because they follow an art that predates Catholicism by 600 years or more. Please keep your snotty comments to yourselves. It does not become a loving, forgiving people like yourselves to spout such hatred.

Some, like Micheal Moore, I’ll agree with, because he has a HUGELY overinflated view of himself. However, Brad pitt was once asked his view on tibet and his answer was simply “I’m only an actor, why do you care about my opinion?”

Ok, that may be a slight paraphrase. But you see my point. Don’t judge someone annoying because they don’t think like you.

I think the most incredible part of this topic is that anyone even listens to what these celebrities say.
It’s a sad commentary on our society that what these fools utter is even given air or press time.
I wouldn’t walk into the next room to see or listen to any of them.

Have you ever read a play? Stage directions are vague, your hand is not being held the whole time and you are not guided through every step. And if you’ve heard actors speak, who have been performing the same play for months, you know the level of improvisation that goes on to quell boredom.

John Paul II was an actor. The profession it very refined, one shouldn’t call it a waste. Nor is it a fool’s job for one being able to act without a higher education. Is your mother’s homemade cooking worth less than the chef’s who went to culinary school?

I took annoying to mean literally annoying as in the way they act or their act but not who they are as people or their political affiliation or religious or whatever. I listed the few folks I listed because they really do annoy me. I’m sorry that that’s being less then Christian. It’s only taken me a few minutes to watch any one of them (on my list) to determine I would never watch them again. Number 1 on my list I don’t think can act and her laugh is annoying. Number 2 on my list is just plain vulgar and number 3 on my list is just plain vulgar; that’s annoying!

Not only have I read plays - I have a BA in English and graduated Cum Laude - I have acted in them. Stage directions are not the only guide that actors follow. Directors guide actors and literally tell them what to do. In most cases, the words the actors recite are someone else’s words and someone else’s passions/views/agendas. Sure, actors have a say in how a scene is portrayed, but the point is that acting relies more on a person’s emotions than anything else. Want to be a scientist, or doctor, or lawyer? You better go to college and be educated in order to be those things. The same is not necessarily true for actors.

I never called acting a waste. I never said acting was a fool’s job. I said it doesn’t require a higher education to be an actor. The link between that notion and actors who annoy people by shouting from the bully pulpit is obvious, and that is the point.

I’m still trying to decipher your comment about my mother’s cooking.
