Most difficult time of the year

Hello,

I officially joined the Church from Judaism. While I was not an Orthodox Jew (I belonged to the Conservative Movement), this is the High Holidays time. Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkoth were such a big part of my life for a long time. It’s not that I have doubts about Christ or the Church, but this year has been especially hard for some reason. My wife doesn’t understand, she is a cradle Catholic. I’m hoping there are others on the board that have had the same experience and can lend a bit of support.

Whilst we haven’t been Hebrew for 3 generations many of my old friends who weren’t Hebrews tried to copy a few Jewish customs or phrases in a small way whilst ensuring they didn’t get superstitious in any sense. These were people who were well at home in the OT anyway.

Can you make in your spare time additional readings from the OT associated with this season and compare them with the current regular Catholic readings (these are often on the Internet as well as in Missals, Office and the like) and see how God makes them mesh together for you.

I think you can reflect on those days and what led you to Catholicism. I have many Jewish friends who I say have a holy Yom Kippur…or whatever is appropriate…so show my profound respect.

Hi! While you have become a Christian that does not mean you need to leave your Jewish traditions behind. I know that there are others who have joined the Church and still keep some of their Jewish customs. I just heard on the radio the other day about there being Messianic Catholic Christian groups. Perhaps someone else will know here or search out on the web.

Since I haven’t had your experience, I can’t really help you except to say I can imagine what it would be like for me to join a non-Christian religion and give up Christmas, Easter and the Sacraments, esp. during the first few years. You have joined the Church, yet you haven’t quite accustomed yourself to those long-standing traditions we are so familiar with, and your Jewish traditions are part of the fabric of your life and always will be. They helped form you as a person.

As time goes by and you inculturate yourself into Catholicism, the grief you have (I believe what you are experiencing is a form of grief) over “losing” your Jewish practices, will ease.
But those memories will always, and should always be precious to you. Embrace them and tell your children about them–it is part of their heritage too.

I sometimes think that perhaps you can still keep some of these traditions alive, after all, Jesus did.

I have always thought that the Jewish day of Atonement is a beautiful thing. Something everyone should think about observing. I don’t know all that much about the Jewish faith, but as long as you are not denying Catholicism or Our Lord as the Messiah, I think you can keep some traditions.
