Has anyone else noticed this?
The band doesn’t necessarily live Christianity, but if they did, it would make sense!

It’d be fun to take this observation to a deeper level on this thread.

I am not familiar with many of their songs, but I do love The Scientist. 🙂

The most Christian song to me is "Paradise". And if you watch this linked video, the elephant reminds me that we are pilgrims on earth, breaking free of worldly chains, on a journey to reach what we were truly made for.

Another song, “Clocks” has the famous inspired piano riff and the following lyrics
my comments in blue:

The lights go out and I can’t be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead, singing

Come out of the things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head and a
Trouble that can’t be named
A tiger’s waiting to be tamed, singing

You are, you are

Confusion that never stops
The closing walls and the ticking clocks gonna
Come back and take you home
I could not stop, that you now know, singing

Come out upon my seas
Cursed missed opportunities am I
A part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease, singing
meaning… he struggles within his soul to do what is right

You are=God
You are, you are
You are, you are
You are, you are

And nothing else compares
And nothing else compares
And nothing else compares

You are, you are

Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go (You are)
Home, home, where I wanted to go (You are)

Home being heaven

I realize that many songs can be used as a Christian metaphor, but Coldplay’s especially so. They are always acknowledging deep human struggles and metaphysical mysteries, which is why I find them particularly appealing–not to mention their incredibly moving music.

I am not familiar with most of their songs, maybe my age,I am 62;) However I really like their song Viva la Vida and yes it too had a Christian, actually Catholic theme.

I like to sing “Roman Catholic choirs are singing” instead of calvary. 😃

Viva LA Vida lyrics are interesting;

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
“Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!”

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

So he’s talking here about how worldly power and pursuit is false. This is also a very Christian message. And then he goes straight to this refrain:

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

Mary’s above comment about Roman Catholic choirs would be the same as Roman cavalry since we are the church militant and we carry the sword of truth. I really do believe he is referring to this, here. I read up today that the band is actually Christian. He was raised devout Christian, but I’m assuming, based off his lifestyle and lyrics, that there’s no doubt he must struggle with temptation.

For some reason I can’t explain
Once you’re gone there was never
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn’t believe what I’d become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

The above lyrics are cryptic. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he is possibly referring to his own situation within stardom and commercialization, how he feels he is their puppet and is fighting a battle with the world that he wants no part of, truly.

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can’t explain
I know Saint Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Woahahahah oh, woahahah oh
Woahahahah oh, woahahah oh,
Woahahahah

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

So maybe this refrain is a prayer… and the foreign field is a spiritual battle.

For some reason I can’t explain
I know Saint Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

ANyhow, it’s fun for me to think about and share. I’d love to hear any thoughts but I’m at peace if people ignore me, too.😃
