You are right, of course. For some reason I never even had the word “science” in my head when I posted. I was probably getting too worked up over Singer. I get riled whenever that man’s name is even mentioned! 😃
Because he… threatened your belief system.

Please don’t get so riled up.

He is simply challenging your belief in something. This should not provoke more than an excellent rebuttal on your part.
Where is the rebuttal?

Or has this idea gone with the wind, and challenging ideas are to be worked up over rather than rationally considered?

A fairly quick rebuttal is the rather unlivable situation that a Singerian society of bestiality and euthanized handicapped people would engender. Beyond that, we could argue that human life is valuable to preserve, animals probably don’t enjoy being molested by humans for sexual purposes, etc. … Pretty common sense stuff, actually. Surely Singer realizes this–I consider him a troll.

Your hypothesis could be correct. But, it does not depend upon “common sense” to be so.

Alright, so we agree on the tragic ridiculousness of Dr. Singer’s reasoning. Perhaps it doesn’t require common sense, just moral sense. 🙂

At least, we hope it does.

We may both be wrong, and that is okay. The greatest honor in science is when a person can refute a hypothosis with a new one.

I am not a wishful thinker that expects my feelings to be proven, but I do wonder why I can not make a leap either way when I see humans treat other humans the way they do while Petco’s and groomers abound.

Ironically, Aquinas’s Philosophical Model for the Summa Theologia was Aristotle, who was considered the Greatest Scientist Ever for Millenia.:o:thumbsup:
Let’s not forget Plotinus as a philosophical influence on Aquinas. Plotinus, also an awesome philosopher.

The Man Has Advocated Euthanizing Mentally Challenged/Handicapped People. Disagreeing with Him Is not Just “Moral Sense”---------It is a Refusal to Countenance EVIL, Period.

It’s a good thing that ratings are not dependent on particular tribal viewpoints closed off from reason by dogmas/

de gustibus non disputandum est.
I am moved by your latin. Don’t ask how.
Just give me an example of your advice to the couple getting married on the other thread where you condone desecration of a Bishop, or have very poor spelling skills.

Because he… threatened your belief system.
Is that a question or a statement? If it is a statement, it is one very big assumption.
Please don’t get so riled up.
How riled up was I?
He is simply challenging your belief in something.
And you are simply making an assumption as to why I might have been riled up.
This should not provoke more than an excellent rebuttal on your part.
This thread does not require rebuttals. Please refer to the thread title.
Where is the rebuttal?
I have canned Singer and his brand of Philosophy on many various threads. Haven’t you been looking?
Or has this idea gone with the wind, and challenging ideas are to be worked up over rather than rationally considered?
The assumptions you make are making you look rather silly. You even go so far as to assume that being riled has nothing to do with being rational

You’ve made quite a few posts here and yet you haven’t stated anything of substance. C’mon, take a shot and tell us who you consider to be overated, or underated, as a Philosopher.

That is, if you have read any of them.

Look, it’s nice of you to play devil’s advocate and all, implying that opposition to ideas like Singer’s would be “tribal” and “closed off from reason.” It would have been more tenable if you didn’t just agree a few posts ago that Singer’s views are somewhat less than virtuous. So what’s the purpose of maintaining this posture? 🤷

True, but we need to keep a cool head when arguing with moral skeptics. It won’t do to just yell “EVIL!”

You have a Point.

OTOH, the Truth IS the Truth.

But Yes, we need to Sweeten the Vinegar with Some Sugar Sometimes.

Derrida, Habermas, basically any continental modernist “thought” to come after the existentialists.

The OP asked for overrated/overemphasized philosophers. It is being subverted by posting who is most underrated.

How? Simply: All things that are moved are being moved by another. But, I digress.

NB: Yes, spelling error on other thread.
