In your opinion, which modern Pope had the most successful overall reign?

I couldn’t limit it to one. PJPII served the longest so that makes him the best known…They have all given us many important spiritual gifts…It’s like trying to pick a favorite child…I refuse to vote

I think John Paul II left a huge legacy. It’s too early to determine Benedict XVI’s legacy, but also Pope Leo XIII and Pius X had really good legacies as well.

Actually, Pius IX served longest. 😃

I chose Blessed Pius IX. I’m not sure he was the most successful and I’m fairly sure that I will not be satisfied with my post.

‘People’ say that His Holiness Benedict XVI has spoken against liturgical abuses and the like. Servant of God John Paul II did too (e.g., Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Redemptionis Sacramentum). The problem is that no one really listened to him all that much.

Likewise, Pius IX said all the right things. I think he even said it loudest; he even convened an ecumenical council to say it.

I think that the decrees of that council are beautiful. Is anyone listening?

Blessed Pius IX, pray for us.

I wasn’t really sure what successful meant,

but I voted for Pope Pius XI, he got Vatican City as independant, and that’s pretty successful IMO.

Pope Pius XII led Christians through one of the most, if not the most, awful times in human history, the Nazi Reign over Europe.

His actions and policies saved millions of lives, and his voice was a voice of wisdom, sanity, and righteousness during those horrific times.

Very few men stood up against Adolf Hitler and lived.

Yet, due to a scurrilous stage play and a lot of propaganda, Pope Pius XII is now falsely vilified in many circles, including among some Catholics. It strikes me that this Pope especially merits heaven because his good works have been thrown into a “closet” and ignored by the world and he has become a pariah, wrongly accused of being “Hitler’s Pope.”

S. Pius X, obviously. My next candidate would be Benedict XVI, but any good judgement would require an ex post facto evaluation, and not while his papacy is still going.

Hmm, maybe more should contribute, as to reasons why for those of us who have known only a couple Popes.

I will give you my contribution to think about, I grew knowing only John Paul II as the Pope for most my life.

He was a kind man, a good man who loved people immensly. He did a good job of bringing the Papacy to the people to making it something that the world paid attention to. He was most holy and a good Catholic but as someone growing up during his pontificate I am not sure he was a great Pope.
He did trust the Bishops too much and did not guard the faith strongly. I think he used his strength of charisma well but allowed our faith to be undermined throughout the world, not because he didn’t care but because he cared too much. He believed in others good will too much when other people probably didn’t have as much good will as John Paul II did.
So I am hesitant to vote for him as he might be a great Priest, Bishop, a great, holy Catholic, but I am not sure he fulfilled to role of Pope strongly. I love him and admire him.

I think many Bishops paid him lip service and he trusted them while they just gave a wink and a nod to what he said, so we ended up with a Church that is big in numbers but not very strong.

I do not know much about the other Popes in this poll so I will wait for more posts to teach me more about them as this can be a very informative

God Bless
Scylla
