As one of “our clergy” who routinely gives answers to questions on this forum and in person among my parishioners, and who strives to adhere to the teachings of the Church, I must throw a flag on this play.

Good day, sir.

You are disparaging a wonderful, holy woman whom many of us, including me, consider as our spiritual mother. Time to cease and desist…this thread was started by someone to fondly remember her, not attack her.

You still have not cited a single specific example…

I may not be an author or have a PHD, but I do have a degree in history and have read a great many Church documents and have watched and listened to EWTN for years and have visited EWTN as well. I have not seen a single instance of their staff making a official statement I would deem to be questionable.

I am also friends with someone who, in addition to being an well known published Catholic author and PHD in theology who has previously taught in Catholic universities. He was previously very involved with EWTN and been on EWTN many times and he had nothing but good things to say about it. Now I am not saying the network is flawless of course or that its staff is, but I consider their body of work over the years to be quite exemplary.

If they are as bad as you say they are then there should be a great many concrete example to back up your
claims. At this point I am not even saying your wrong (though I do believe you are) but am merely saying that if you are going to make such statements you should have am amble body of evidence to back it up and be willing to present it.

Another one I saw - was a monk ( young guy ) on a skateboard -
sharing Jesus at a park where kids hang out -
He was dressed as a Franciscan - doing tricks on the skateboard -
I fail to see what is questionable about this.

I just purchased your book as it was recommended by Karl Keating. I am very interested in reading it. Thank you for posting the link.

What are the titles of your books? Which EWTN programs did you appear on and when? And what has made you decide not to appear anymore?

Is it the whole network you have an issue with or the late Mother Angelica herself? If you feel the network has gone astray, then you need to pray for those now in charge of it. And of course, you don’t have to watch the programs if you feel they are in error.

If your problem is with Mother herself, she is no longer alive to defend herself. Pray for her soul and be at peace knowing that God remains in charge of His Church.

I was intrigued by the discussion of a skateboarding monk, so I looked him up. I’m impressed.
Also, his superior apparently told him to start skating again and go to the skate parks, after he’d given it up for 6 years due to being a monk. So he was just following orders.

I think calling her St. Mary Angelica of the Eternal Word would be awesome 🙂

You know she’ll end up being called “St. Mother Angelica” informally though, the same as for the other great American saints St. Mother Elizabeth Seton and St. Mother Katharine Drexel.

As it so happens, I was watching part of a program of hers this morning. She was a very wise, very holy woman with a deep love of God and an insistence on the truth of God. I am reminded that Rhoda Wise received a message from Jesus during an ecstasy in the 1940s that Rita Rizzo (the future Mother Angelica) would do great things for the Church. She did indeed, and she was nothing short of an inspiration, a light in the world. I believe with every fiber of my being that she is in Heaven as we speak here.

I hope EWTN runs her shows forever

she made that network

they should never forget her
I certainly won’t forget her. She is a heroine of mine. I’m a cradle catholic, but she brought me much closer to the Lord with her teaching. Her story is incredible. Her humor was contagious.

I miss her!

I’m a cradle Catholic who was away from the Church for many years. It was her show that started me on my journey back. I will always remember her and continue to watch the reruns and look forward to her sainthood.

I didn’t have a normal healthy relationship with my own mother, and I can’t get excited about Mother Angelica.

She herself said that all the people at EWTN did all the work and she got the credit. So, I don’t have to make up something negative about her. She said it herself.

I dislike her nationalism, bragging about being Italian – which is undoubtedly why a lot of people like her. So? I’m of Polish descent, so I’m bad?

If I started up a religious network like she did, I too would have everybody there praying for me at every Mass. See? That’s what I don’t understand. If she was already so holy, why did she need all those prayers? In the general intercessions of the Mass, she and the nuns usually come up #1 for prayers.

And now, her picture shows up in the background of the studio programs. C’mon. give me a break.

Yes ! That’s the clip.
Now I don’t want to be flagged -
( I’ve notice how some people on this site flag what they disagree with )
But when I think of monks…like Saint Francis of Assisi…
Or the movie “ Into the Great Silence “
I don’t think of skateboarders and basketball.

I know I’m off topic -
I’m not trying to disparage anyone -
Please don’t think I’m judging anyone or anything unfairly -
If monks today - are allowed - fine !

I saw the topic was going towards EWTN -
But I now know how strict - some people are - sticking to the exact topic.
I had no idea my post would about EWTN would be flagged.

I’m not Italian and I never once got the impression she was mentioning being Italian as a way of claiming some sort of superiority. And she made it very clear that she was human just like everyone else, with faults, bad habits, a temper, etc… This made her relatable. She would say that we’re all called to holiness, but she never tried to hold herself up as some sort of model of perfect holiness. She was someone in need of prayer, just like everyone else. I don’t see how she can be faulted for that.

Based on this logic, it is totally wrong for Pope Francis to ask us to pray for him (which he does all the time), and we shouldn’t pray for the pope to get an indulgence (which is required to receive one), and we shouldn’t pray for the pope during the universal prayers at mass either (which almost every parish does at every single mass)…

🤨
