My mother in law has been staying with us for almost 6+ years. I think I’ve had enough of her staying with us. Her husband is in a foreign country. I do not know the exact reasons she chooses to stay with us vs. her husband who she is still married to.

As a loving father and husband, do I have the right to ask her to find her own place? She was toying with the idea of going home for the winter to her husband then come back again. So I prepared a letter, which I sent my wife, to ask her not to come back or find another place.

Uh, I’m guessing the MIL fills the void of a “loving” husband who prepares and writes a letter to his wife instead of having a heart-to-heart talk. The issue isn’t MIL is it? Try some marriage counseling.

It is your house. She has no legal right to stay there.

If she has a husband then it is his responsibility to look after her; not yours; if she has a Job or is able to work / has a pension then she should get her own place; and you are not morally obliged to help her.

The only condition under which you might be morally obligated to help her is if she was aged and infirm and at risk of becomming homeless if she was told to leave. If she is able to get her own place or live with her husband - you are morally able to ask her to leave.

I have to agree with an earlier poster (to an extent).

Why did you send your wife a letter instead of speaking with her directly?

Communication abounds in this household, doesn’t it?!?

You SEND your wife a letter (doesn’t she LIVE with you?). Why can’t you TALK to her?
You DON’T KNOW why you MIL lives with you? Don’t you talk to her either?

Speak, boy, speak. Start the talking!

i dont blame the guy for sending a letter…it says that he prepared a letter to give to the mother in law, and he gave a copy to his wife…at least that is what i gathered from it.
oh, mother in laws can be something else.
