Hello Everyone,
Please enlighten me on the importance of Mary in the Catholic religion. She was the mother of Christ, yes, but, she didn’t work miracles like the Son and God. Why worship her so much?

Okay #1 We don’t worship her! Point blank! The Catholic Church condemned Collyridianism (the actual worship of Mary) in the 4th century. We also excommunicated nuns who actually did worship Mary. We only honor Mary

The Church places a distinction between -


  1. *]Latria - Worship of God
    *]Hyperdulia - High honor of Mary
    *]Dulia - Honor of the Saints

    #2 We pray to her for her intercession (meaning we pray to her so she can pray to God). We have statues to commemorate her, we don’t worship the statues. We don’t pray to them either. We pray to her in front of her but not them.

    #3 Catholics only worship God. Always remember that, we don’t worship Mary, or saints, or the popes, or priests, or statues, or icons or pictures or candles.
 
We don’t worship Mary, my friend.
We honour and venerate her, and ask her intercession. She prays for us and we bring flowers to her. She is Mother of our Saviour, sinless and was conceived without sin, and worthy of our praise.

We worship God, the Holy Trinity. We honour, adore, praise, worship, and glorify Him. He alone is who Catholics worship.

Hi Protestant Me,

Only the Holy Trinity, our God, is worshipped by Catholic Christians.

Catholic Christians do love & honor our Mother Mary.

A simple answer is that Catholic Christians are called to imitate Jesus Christ. Jesus loved & honored his mother and so we do too. The 4th Commandment is “Honor your father and your mother” and Jesus kept this and all Commandments.

There is no possiblity that any Catholic Christian could ever love the Virgin Mary as much as Jesus does. We fallen human beings simply don’t have the capacity to love as deeply as Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, has.

Plus, reading Rev. 12 will reveal to you that Mary, the Mother of the Eternal King, is the Mother of all Christians and again, we are supposed to obey the Commandments which include “Honor your mother”.

Can you please tell me why most Protestants don’t love and honor Mary, the Woman who said “Yes!” to God and gave birth Jesus Christ and took care of your Savior His entire life, even inspiring Him to do His first miracle launching Him public ministry which led to the possibility of our Salvation?

We honor her, we love her, we revere her, we ask her to whisper in her Son’s ear about us and others, and we ask her to pray for others and ourselves.
 
My goal in life is to love Jesus as perfectly as I can. What’s more pure than a mother’s love for her child? Being a mother myself, I know just how powerful that is. Look at Mary as a wonderful example of how to perfectly love Jesus. No one ever has or ever will love Jesus the way She did. If you don’t want to pray for Her intercession, fine. But I encourage you to at least get to know Her and contemplate Her life journey with Jesus! What an amazing love!

The Blessed Virgin Mary is not worshipped. I reiterate my fellow Catholics in saying that. It is a common misconception that must be stomped out. Catholics do NOT worship Mary. We pray for her intercession, for her graces, for her prayers. We beseech her, beg her, petition her, but we do not worship her. If you refuse to understand anything in the rest of the post, atleast understand that. Afterwards, tell your fellow Protestants that. Tell them the truth about our devotion to Mary.

Remember, my protestant brother in Christ, that no heavenly gift is given to men which does not pass through her virginal hands. She is SO important. Our love for her leads us to a greater love of Jesus, her son. Our love is that of children to a mother. This mother feeds us with the spiritual milk of Heaven. She feeds us with the nutrition of Christ. She said yes, which paved the road to victory over sin and evil. She is so powerful an intercessor. A greater advocate than any Saint. For it must be remembered the gifts given to the Israelites by the prayers of Moses. Moses prayed to God to curb His fury against His rebellious people. So how much more powerful would the prayers of Mary be? The MOTHER of GOD? She, the Blessed Virgin, is the dispenser of all His graces. She, the Blessed Virgin, leads Christendom into victory. It was through her glorious intercession, afterall, that the Christians repelled the invasion of the Turks in 1571.

All that being said, I must also bring to light her enormous importance as an example. We are all called to holiness. So who are we to use as an example to follow? As I said previously, Mary said yes. Thus, who would be better to follow the lead of? Mary submitted to God’s Will, this inspires us to do the same. We are called to look to Mary for guidance, to intercession, to all that we need because Christ never ignores her prayers. Mary would never pray for something contrary to the will of God. She IS our Mother. So, to quote Saint Louis de Montfort, “anyone who does not have Mary for his mother does not have God for his father”. This is very true.

Mary guarded Jesus, Our Lord. Mary nurtured Our Lord. Mary praised Our Lord and it was Mary who was the first Christian. True Devotion to Mary leads to Salvation, for true devotion to Mary leads to Christ who is our Salvation. Therefore, my dear brother in Christ, it is important to understand Mary as our Lady, as our Mother, and as our Queen.

It’s curious that you regard working miracles as a criteria.
God chose Mary of all the women throughout the ages.

Luke chapter 1 verses 26-
**God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” **** Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. **
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” **
** “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” **

I don’t think we can argue with God, dear friend, that Mary is significant to God.

And can we doubt for an instant that Jesus did not deeply love Mary…so why would we not if we love Him? Jesus was in extremity on the Cross, tortured, beaten, dragging up upon nails to breathe in His human weakness in that body that the Father gave Him trough Mary to save us as God Incarnate…that loving Son turned to John, the only faithful disciple, and asked him to accept Mary as mother, and asked His Mother to accept John as son…providing for her before He died…what love!
How then should we regard her whom He loved?
 
You mention miracles. Where is Mary in this?
Firstly remember that Jesus came on earth as a helpless baby who lived in a family subjected to real problems, like death-threats for instance that led to Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus becoming refugees in Egypt…

God wanted His Son incarnate in order to save us in His life, death, and resurrection…but couldn’t God have done that by simply sending Jesus as an adult human? If God had done that it would have been enough, because God is God and God is creator.

Instead God chose to allow His divine son to live what even his fellow townspeople recognized as an ordinary life. Good, but ordinary, and they wanted to throw Him off a cliff later when he told them He was more, He was the Messiah. "But we know his family…etc.** 29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way. **Luke 4:29

More important that the miracles is the witness, and in that 'ordinary thirty years of quiet good-living according to the Commandments, God shows us how important is the witness of Christian living. He showed it in Jesus, and in Mary.

However, remember the very first known miracle at the wedding feast of Cana

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

** 1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” **4 “Woman,a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
** 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” **
** 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.(“http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+2&version=NIV#fen-NIV-26102b”)]
** 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. **
** 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”**
** They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” **
** 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him**. John Chapter 2

You see what happened? Mary interceded for the hosts, who were about to lose face in the community,
Jesus said, it’s not time for miracles.
Mary just told the servants to obey Him,
Jesus acceded fto Mary, His mother’s intercession and did the miracle despite His protest that it wasn’t yet time for miracles
So if we Catholics ask her intercession, by Jesus’ response at the Wedding Feast of Cana, He put His seal on our doing so. It would not be included in the inspired word of God if not so.
 
Spouses who love each other are naturally attracted to each other, and are very close.

Mary was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and subsequently was found to be pregnant with Jesus. Mary is therefor the spouse of the Holy Spirit, specifically chosen as such by God the Father.

And so if Mary is in your heart and soul, then the Holy Spirit who loves his spouse, will come into your heart and soul to be with his spouse.

That is why we love Mary. If she is good enough for God the Holy Spirit and God the Holy Spirit goes to her to be with her, then we should do so as well, and she draws the Holy Spirit to us by her presence. And if you have the Holy Spirit, what more could you want?

It’s that simple.

Many others have given great responses, so I won’t re-state anything that has already been said. But I would like to share some Bible verses which illustrate why and how Catholics venerate Mary, the Mother of God.

First, Luke 1:28, the passage which forms the first part of the traditional Catholic prayer the Hail Mary:
“And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.”

It is worth noting that here the angel uses “full of grace” as a title for Mary, a usage not repeated anywhere else in Scripture. This clearly demonstrates the high regard with which Mary is to be held.

Another great example is the Magnificat, one of the most beautiful prayers the Church has, and one which is often used prominantly in the liturgy. It is the canticle sung by Mary in Luke 1:46-55
My soul doth magnify the Lord.
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid;
for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Because he that is mighty,
hath done great things to me;
and holy is his name.
And his mercy is from generation unto generations,
to them that fear him.
He hath shewed might in his arm:
he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat,
and hath exalted the humble.
He hath filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He hath received Israel his servant,
being mindful of his mercy:
As he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his seed for ever.

It is my opinion that many well-meaning Protestants would do well to stop and wonder if they have stopped treating Mary as “blessed.”
