Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In listening to the First Reading for Mass today together with the Gospel, there is such encouragement to hear how God loves us and wants us to love as He loves. Mary our Mother is our Model and how well she bears the title, “Mother of Mercy, our life our sweetness and our hope”, for she is Mother of God Who is all Mercy, Life, Sweetness and Hope and she radiates for us in the most perfect manner all a human person can radiate of His attributes.
Mary is our human model, she is not Christ and not Divine, but God has so endowed her with Grace that she is given to us as a Mother who brings Jesus to us, and brings us closer to Him. The First Reading from SIR 27:30—28:7, tells us:
When we hear the Gospel - MT 18:21-35- and the words of Jesus, how can we refuse to forgive anyone – certainly when we consider how often we have offended God and He has offered us His forgiveness, can we not forgive others? Jesus in teaching us the perfect prayer, has taught us to pray: “…forgive us, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” How important Jesus has made our forgiveness of others! He fulfilled the Old Law which we heard in the First Reading and showed us by His example that if we are to love truly, we need to be willing to forgive all that we may suffer from others.
Again we can look to Mary standing at the foot of His Cross. We can hear as she heard Jesus say: “Father, forgive them…” Mary kept all Jesus said and did in her heart, pondering. She heard His Truth and did His Truth, lovingly; and by His Grace, so must we.
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy; hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you do we cry poor banished children of Eve, to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us and after this exile, show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Mary our Mother certainly thought of the commandments and there was no hate in her heart when she looked upon her Crucified Son. She saw Love willing to suffer. She saw Mercy pouring out from His pierced Heart and remembered His covenant. She was able to unite her sufferings with the sufferings of Jesus and overlook our faults.
