When she was asked. What do you consider the worlds greatest problem?

She said: “Wherever I go in the whole world, the thing that makes me the saddest is watching people take communion in the hand.”

Was she wrong to feel that way?

No. Well, I mean, is it worse than say homosexuality? I doubt it…

Pax Christi tecum.

Why would she be wrong to feel that way? Many people dislike and do not agree with the practice. The Holy Father himself prefers that people receive on the tongue. I think she has a lot of good company on this one.👍

Yeah I think she was right to be against the practice.

Pax Christi tecum.

What could possibly be wrong with the statement she made? I agree…we should not receive in the hand.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Paul VI and John Paul II both strongly recommended that the faithful receive communion on the tongue.

Was she wrong to bemoan communion in the hand?

Or was she wrong to allow that event to make her* the saddest she ever was*, to consider it the “world’s greatest problem”?

Two very different questions.

I don’t think she was wrong to bemoan communion in the hand.
I think that equating it with the world’s BIGGEST problem, particularly in light of abortion, rape, war, famine, etc. etc. is a bit like my 6 year old saying that her brother wrecking her fort is “the worst thing ever!” Does it stink? Yes. The stinkiest thing ever? C’mon.

Mother Teresa knew about the evils of this world. If she felt that receiving the Eucharist in hand contributed to these problems, she probably knew what she was talking about.

Her statement is the only statement I have heard on this Traditionalist forum that would make me consider receiving the Eucharist on the tongue.

Mother Teresa lived the Eucharist. She lived the suffering of Christ.

Or is it first wrong to believe that Mother Teresa ever said it, with no citation given?

If mother Teresa did say this, it prooves that she knew, TRULY KNEW what the Blessed Sacrament is.

And Holy Mother Church doesn’t know Who the Blessed Sacrament is?
If by Holy Mother Church you mean “us” the church then no…not everyone truly understands
Yes they may be taught that it is Jesus but do they(we) truly truly believe it

as Ghandi said about the Blessed Sacrament:
“If I believed that was God I would be on my face”

Here’s what I found for documentation for the quote:
I will tell you a secret, since we have just a thousand close friends together, and also because we have the Missionaries of Charity with us, whom the Holy Spirit has sent into the world that the secrets of many hearts might be revealed. Not very long ago I said Mass and preached for their Mother, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and after breakfast we spent quite a long time talking in a little room. Suddenly, I found myself asking her-I don’t know why-“Mother, what do you think is the worst problem in the world today?” She more than anyone could name any number of candidates: famine, plague, disease, the breakdown of the family, rebellion against God, the corruption of the media, world debt, nuclear threat, and so on. Without pausing a second she said, "Wherever I go in the whole world, the thing that makes me the saddest is watching people receive Communion in the hand.
-Fr. George William Rutler, Good Friday, 1989, sermon at St. Agnes Church, New York City.
from: catholic-pages.com/mass/inhand.asp

I can’t find a primary source for the sermon, though, but at least we have a name.

That said, supposing that Fr. Rutler did have occasion to ask Mother Teresa this, and supposing that her answer is correctly recorded, then I stand by my original statement.

Does it stink? Yes. Is it the stinkiest thing ever? No.

Last time I checked, Holy Mother Church had condemned and is actively working to end grave evils like abortion, rape, murder, etc. etc. Communion in the hand doesn’t make that list anywhere I’ve seen.

Sounds like the proverbial “Friend of a Friend” Quote!

My bishop says its ok for me to receive in the hand. My bishop is in communion with the local Church, the Holy Father and the Magisterium. If that is an actual quote from Mother Teresa then that is her problem. Saints are not perfect!

I respectfuly submit to the authority of my bishops who legaly set the norms in this local Church. If the Holy Father requires that I receive on the tongue then I will submit to his authority and obey. Mother Teresa was the model for obedience!

What do you mean “that is her problem” and “saint are not perfect”
Are you implying that she was wrong in thinking like this?

She wasn’t saying the church doesn’t allow it…of course bishops ALLOW this but in the end you got to see it for what it is…something that is ALLOWED!

If we knew how unworthy we were to recieve Jesus…our knees would buckle at sight of Jesus and we would fall on our knees
We would cry if we meditate on this great mystery and love that Jesus has for us
