Does this thread get recycled every six months or so? I’m sure I’ve read this one before…Might it be fair that if you post your comments again, that you insert a few good arguments from the last time we all responded?
So, I’m not the only one . . . 😛 😛

I dont want to “judge” mother teresa, since that is only gods province.

I just feel we should look at her carefully and just come to an honest conclusion about her methods and motivations. I just feel she is praised for “helping the poorest of the poor” without anyone saying what that “help” consisted of.

I also think it is fine to point out inconsistincies or contradictions, like how, in her sickness and old age, she didn’t try and recover in one of the homes she set up for the poor.

I disagree with hitchens on many things, yet for a time found him an entertaining writer, with a lot of wit and humor. I just wonder if perhaps he may have been correct on Mother Teresa, in that she cared more about “getting souls to heaven” and praying for poor, than actually relieving their material hunger, suffering, and ignorance. Isnt heaven most important thing anyway?

Btw, I think I had good reason to wonder if F. Franco was a saint. He saved Spain from Godless Bolshevism, and delivered it into the loving arms of Holy Mother Church!
Sounds like you still have a long way to go in your faith. Keep on praying and study the faith and you would be better off. Going down memory lane with your entertainment by hitchens shows your attachment to godless ways. At some point you will learn that hitchens is a liar and doing the bidding of the evil one. he is to be pitied, not idolized.

Hmm, I agree. A woman gives up the comfort of western life to live a celibate life in the rat hole of Calcuta, spends the next 50 years taking care of the sick and dying . Sounds fishy to me too.

By the way Mr. Catholic in good standing thats God, not god.

O.K. in all seriousness what I said above trumps all. Have you gone to a 3rd world country and tried to help anyone? If not you have no room to talk.

Did she make mistakes? Maybe. But I don’t consider Hitchins a credible source. I have a prejudicial bent that says Atheists lie.

Millions and millions of dollars? Whats your source that said she ever got this money?

People may have sent it. But 3rd world countries are poor because the governments take all the money. Bob Geldolf found this out in the 80’s with Live aid, and band aid. He raised millions of dollars to help starving people in Africa, but was unable to get any of it to the people he wanted to help because of the governments of those countries.

In other words you can’t just walk into Calcutta with a sack full of money and say “I have millions and millions of dollars now let’s fix this.” you’ll be arrested on the spot and the money confiscated.

Yet she didn’t give up, and did the best she could.

And for that someone like Hitchins, who probably never gave a dime to help anyone, has the gall to criticize her? Shameful.

I have always heard all my life that mother teresa was a paragon of virtue, a saint living on earth.

However it seems that the Vatican has promoted this image of her, and has ignored what appear to be flaws with her ministry. It is true that she worked among the “poorest of the poor” in Calcutta. But even after 40 years of working there, after the millions and millions of dollars of donations she received her homes in India and the rest of the world were still basically broken down ramshackle, almost medieval institutions. Notice how it was called M. Teresa’s “House for the dying” not “House of healing.”

I also find it a tad hypocritical that her patients had to do with reused, unsterilized needles and a lack of real pain killers, while she always checked into the finest California clinics to deal with her health problems later in life.😊

Idk, it just seems odd that she talked so much about the poor and suffering, when she did not do that much to offer them material aid ( though she clearly had the resources to do so.)

I find it a little funny too that in the 1980s she flew to Haiti ( where did money for plane ticket come from?) to meet with the Duvalier family. The duvaliers were about the very worst of Latin Americas dictators. Seriously, they made Pinochet and Noriega look civic minded and saintly!

Despite that, despite the Duvaliers brutal repression and exploitation of their countries poor, she met with them, and announced how much they cared about poor people, and how fortunate the poor were to have such kind leaders as the duvaliers. She was paid handsomely for that.

Interestingly enough, there seems to be no great demand among the Catholic faithful to have her made “Santo Subito” the way there was ten years ago. It is as if she was completly forgotten… or eclipsed by her boss, JPII

Idk, the more I look into her, the more it seems like she was not a friend of the poor, but a friend and admirer of poverty. Like she relished in the poverty and suffering of India, and thought how spiritually cleansing and uplifting it was for those who had the “privelage” to live in such conditions.

What do my fellow Church members think?
Oh for the love of Pete!

Look I know I have ruffled quite a few feathers here.

I dont mean any blasphemy or disrespect. But I think the facts are stubborn things and are worth taking a look at. Like was Hitchens wrong? If so when and where?

Just because he was an atheist, does not mean he had everything wrong. A stopped clock is right twice a day. His book on the Clintons I found to be excellent ( he thought they were selfish crooks!)

The burden isnt ours to prove him wrong. That would be like me saying Hitchins was gay. Now prove me wrong. The burden of proof resides with the accuser.
So prove prove Hitchins right

Friends, forgive me this topic.

It has been discussed by many before me. It seems I only have offended and scandalized the faithful of this thread. I wouldnt object to it being deleted, and I shall not press the matter further!

WHAT “facts” ? Hitchen’s spewing hatred and lies?

Did you read any other books besides his? I would suggest that you do and I would also suggest that you go over there and work a day in her shoes!

Indeed, and I hope he repented before, with his last breath, he slipped into eternity. But here’s a fitting quote for the attacks we see on Mother Teresa:

“The foe and enemy of the Church despises and passes by those whom he has alienated from the Church, and led without as captives and conquered; he goes on to harass those in whom he sees Christ dwell.” - Saint Cyprian, Epistle 56, To Cornelius in Exile, Concerning His Confession

.

Mother Teresa is a fraud and the myth of her good deeds and holiness is far beyond laughable.

But people would rather hold on and put faith in the lies and untruths that hold her up as some kind holy person.

Hey New Join,

Our Lord said we’d be known by our love.

How’s your love stacking up to the holy woman’s love you call a fraud?

Not sensing it, fellow CAFers, are we?

“Away with the Atheists.” (St Polycarp).

For the record, I was an agnostic when I started on this forum. Now I am a Catholic in good standing!🙂

I never said she was perfect. I just wonder if perhaps she is made out to be something she wasn’t.

I realize her clinics were not suburban america. Im just saying she had millions of dollars, that should have made her able to build clinics that actually tried to heal the sick instead of just leaving them to die.

I actually just finished HItchens’ tract against her. Very offensive no doubt. But I have not seen any of it refuted.

Her miracle sounds a bit fishy as well. It can only have been “miraculous” if there was no rational explanation. The Bengali woman in question was taking antibiotics to help with her cyst. sooo… maybe?

Unless Hitchens is an out and out liar, I think though his work deserves to be looked at.

It seems that Mother Teresa’s attitude was in part “My friends and benefactors, right or wrong, my friends and benefactors.”

A good example of this occured in a Ladies home journal interview in 1995. At the time M.T was vigorously campaigning against a bill that would legalize divorce in Ireland. When asked what she she thought of her good friend Princess Diana’s divorce she replied “It is a good thing the marriage ended, since it seemed to be such an unhappy one!”

That hardly seemed right for M.T to say. She should have had the integrity to say that Di was committing a serious sin and should have made a stronger effort to stay with Prince Charles. I mean surely there were unhappier more miserable marriages that M.T wanted to make it impossible to end…
I don’t know this “Hitchens” but I do know there are tens of thousands of books written by people whose agenda is quite obscure to me (unless I take them at face value, in which case the agenda is just plain evil) disclaiming everything sacred or of faith. There are books about the redactor who “wrote the bible”, books disclaiming Fatima as a UFO EVENT!!!, books and books all speaking to one point the author(s) have in mind: his/her own personal philosophy, state of mind, emotional health, and faithlessness, not to mention godlessness. SO? Do we have to read them all? To what purpose?

Our faith and love for Jesus does not come from books written by Popes and Cardinals or saints, it comes from the Holy Spirit. Since you were agnostic (I guess not raised as a RC), you may not remember the Index: this was a list of things forbidden to Catholics for reading. There is a reason for this (it has since been abolished, btw). Many people are so easily dissuaded, so easily led astray, that exposure to this intellectual poison can literally cost them their salvation. I’ve heard stories about MT also; I was not there. As another poster said, her third world country is a horrific place filled with extreme poverty (that makes the homeless on our streets look like kings), illness, desperation, violence, and certain social customs that are absolutely outrageous. It’s not all silk saris and exquisite jewelry, you know. Why did she never feel the “presence of God”…I can’t answer that. But if I were surrounded by unfair illness, suffering, death day and night perhaps I would have trouble communicating with God also, “hearing” and “seeing” Him.

Ultimately, we are all called to be saints. There are millions more saints than the RC Church recognizes because they are obscure, lost in the numbers of souls that have passed into God’s hands, but not lost to God. Nor to us. If one were to examine some miracles attributed to some saints (from many hundreds of years ago), one would most likely see that some of these were, in all likelihood, not actually miraculous. And? Does that negate the work of God through that person? I think not.

I don’t think this forum a particularly appropriate place for the discussion of those writings deliberately intended to destroy faith, disrupt faithfulness; that’s an intellectual exercise. I don’t know if there’s a forum for such things here. I do know that I’ve studied and read for a very, very long time and I am more confirmed in my faith now that at any other time in my life. I also know that challenging one’s faith deliberately is a huge error. So, why do it?
