I have recently discovered this wonderful “Family Life” forum at CAF. I’ve been a regular at the “Spirituality” and “Liturgy” forums for awhile… and still participate in those forums. But there is just something about this “Family Life” forum… that is wonderful!

I’ve seen people coming together here for everything from prayers… to marriage and child rearing advice… to recipes… to household tips… to stories of our cute little furry animal friends.

There is really an atmosphere of “Family” on this forum. It IS what it says it is. Just a comment I wanted to make. 🙂

So here’s my question… (you guys, in particular… might know the answer to this)… is there anything that will clean motor oil off of asphault? I’m hoping that I won’t have to spend a ton of money on something from the store. Plus, I don’t want to poison any outdoor kitties in our neighborhood. Will something like vinegar work?

Thanks in advance. God bless.

Try baking soda or cat litter. Use just enough to make granules and then sweep it up.

I assume you mean concrete, not asphalt. Asphalt has oil in it. Buy a cheap bag of Kitty Litter and sweep it over and over the oil spot. It should sop it up. There are shop products used specifically for this kind of thing. If you want or need to break it up completely, after sweeping over to the point that you really can’t do any better, consider getting Dawn or some other good detergent to break up the oil and that’ll clean it up.

Cheap kitty litter (not the stuff with special crystals in it, just the plain little clay particles) will soak up the oil. If the oil is sorta thick and sticky and blackened, you may need to thin it a bit. To do that, pour on a little bit of mineral spirits or gasoline or that stuff you sprinkle onto charcoal to start a fire. That will dissolve and thin the sticky black oil so that the kitty litter can soak it up. If you have an old brush - perhaps the kind that cleans grills or an old scrub brush you can throw away, you might scrub the spot a bit with a bit of the thinning agent to break it up. Pour on kitty litter until it’s covered and leave overnight, then sweep up in the morning. That should get most of it.

Wow! Kitty litter seems to be the general consensus here! We have plenty of that in our house… and it won’t poison the outdoor kitties!

Thank you, everyone for your replies! :thankyou: God bless.

Kitty litter is the most amazingly absorbent stuff. It should be the best.
But I also agree about the Dawn, for washing the surface down, afterward, if you want to be extra careful; dish soap, being made to dissolve grease & oil, will give you extra peace of mind that the oil is gone.

I’d like to add that liquid detergents are prescribed by a well know horticulturalist in his home remedies that supposedly work better than good chemical. I’ve tried it except for the eurine part. Can’t get myself to mix a product like that and spray on stuff around my house. But I’ve throught about doing it the natural way to keep away cats that seems to flock to my home. We already have 3 cats and a dog. Not to mention wild squirrels and a rabit. The rodent population seems to have decline ever since our new cat arrived and we gave the others access to outside.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew. :o

It’s a good thing that God made kitties so cute… because they sure can be GROSS sometimes. 😃

Last summer… one day, we were arriving home from the market. Our little cat “Spooky” stepped out of the bushes and proudly presented me with a gift. A LIVE bird. lol.

I lurched forward (in disgust), and Spooky dropped the bird. And it got away… but probably died later. He had sunk his teeth into it pretty far.

I will try the liquid dish soap thing, tomorrow… hopefully! Let ya know how it worked! Thanks! You guys are great! 👍
