I didn’t know which forum best to put this in.

Anyway: I’m seriously looking into grad school for Catholic theology. I’m open to options and tracks. Masters is what I’m currently going for — and I’m not on any ordination track. Right now I just have religious studies background (Bachelor of Arts).

Anyway, does anyone know about this school?

Anyone have other recommendations?

I would not recommend the Atheneum of Ohio. I would instead HIGHLY RECOMMEND the grad program at The Franciscan University of Steubenville. They have typical on-campus student program as well as a summer program and an online program. I received my degree from FUS in 1994 - best decision I ever made. They are orthodox - i.e. they teach what the Church actually teaches.

“Back in the day” the Athenaeum wasn’t a solid seminary. That, however, has since changed under the leadership of Archbishop Schnurr. From what I understand, the Fathers of Mercy now send all of their seminarians there, and a few of their own priests teach there. I’ve known a good number of students and seminarians that have gone there in recent years and absolutely loved it.

That being said, I’d recommend you go their theology track, and not their pastoral ministry track. From what I’ve heard, the pastoral ministry track is still struggling a little under the influence of the old regime.

That being said, grad school in general is very expensive. At one point in time, Franciscan’s online M.A. program was very affordable. Not sure how affordable it is now though. But if you’re already living in the Cincinnati area, you honestly can’t go wrong with the Athenaeum.

(just for full disclosure: I’m a Franciscan grad and all but have my M.A. in theology through Franciscan’s online program [wasn’t able to finish because of the demands of my growing family]. I’ve not attended the Athenaeum, but have known people who did, and am close friends with one of their previous Directors of Development).

I would not recommend the Atheneum of Ohio.
Why not? Do you have experience there? The Athenaeum is currently a very solid seminary with a solid faculty and theology program, probably one of the best in the country. They are completely orthodox. I can certify that. This comes from personal experience.

I’m honestly not sure on that one. Franciscan’s online program used to be very affordable, but they had a price “restructuring” a few years ago. I have no idea what it costs now.

Two years ago our parish started sending the seminarians from our parish to Atheneum.
