I just spent a few days in the countryside of central Texas. It was a lovely place, full of pleasant sights and interesting birds. However, after a few days I began to feel a real uneasiness about being so far away from the mountains. Flying home, my heart jumped with joy as I began to see my beloved shy islands rising up from the valley floor.

This made me think about the spiritual significance of mountains in the bible and made me contemplate if my spirituality is somehow tied to these magnificent places.

Years ago a homeless woman at my parish’s winter shelter gave me a brown paper lunch sack with a drawing of some mountains and this psalm :
I raise my eyes toward the mountains.

From whence shall come my help?

My help comes from the LORD

Is there something about mountains that make them special, or do I just like them because I’ve lived among them all my life? How about you? Do mountains,or any other natural place hold any spiritual significance for you? Are some places more special than others?
 
no place like home

i grew up amongst nj foothills

but i spent many years in northern indiana & coastal virginia

both flat as a pancake

i was happy in all those places

if tall mountains inspire you spiritually… well, then… they do 🙂

I think they are just what you like.
Mountains to me are pretty, but I get antsy if I feel landlocked, and my favorite natural feature to see has always been Lake Erie, because I grew up in a city on that lake.
 
In the Gospels, when Jesus goes up to a mountain or high place, very significant things happen. The same holds true for Moses in the Old Testament. Good insight on your part.
 
I like going to the mountains, especially when I can see far distances. It reminds me of how small I am and how big God, creator of the universe, is.

I just a program last night in general relativity. The higher up you go, the faster time passes because of less gravity.

But yes, mountains. Are sacreplaces because closer to " heaven". But I also love the ocean.
 
We have a retreat center located in the mountain, a nice conducive place to have retreats. We also have retreat in resorts or hotels too though sometimes even in the parish.

Does not matter to me as long as the place is available and appropriate enough. So no attachment to them in any way other than personal like.
 
And so symbolic. I think of Mt Carmel and the mystic ascent John of the Cross wrote about.

And “Who can climb the mountain of the Lord?” Psalm 24
 
For me - it’s two bible events
Now these bible events that took place - fascinate me…
Moses comes down from the mountain, face is shining, so bright, he wears a vale.
Jesus, with 2-3 disciples, transfigured.

I do feel God loves mountains - and all that goes on -
He did not like the Human made tower of Babel…
But they seem to be a place for spiritual renewal.
Monks of all religions seem to know this.
Some very cool monastery’s are built in such regions.
