Movie "Deliver us from evil" - - Ralph Sarchie

I saw that a new movie is coming out, about a cop and NY and his friend, an unconventional priest / exorcist. Looks like some version of a true life / horror movie, based on the true experiences of a real NYPD officer Ralph Sarchie. Just wondered if anyone is familiar with this book, or person? It will probably be in entertainment media soon (movie come out July 2). Based on the book “Beware the night : a New York cop investigates the supernatural”.
 
Just about every exorcism movie seems to claim to be based on true events. It’s a marketing tactic and almost an integral component of the genre. Usually they have something or other to point to to justify the claim. A few movies, like “The Rite” have more real source material than average and even collaboration by real exorcists, but even then they take huge liberties with the plot.

In general most people watch these films out of a very unhealthy (in my opinion) desire to be emotionally stimulated, in this case through a sort of occult horror fetish fantasy that I could easily see being a door to the truly demonic, or the result of real demonic promptings. It’s also possible to watch the comparatively more realistic and religious ones from a pious or intellectual motive so I’m not saying one should never see them, but I would stay away from the trashier movies in any case. I don’t know where this film falls on that spectrum from the iffy to the truly horrible.
 
Iv heard it’s a pretty good movie and decently pro catholic. It’s by the same fellow who did the Excorsiom of Emily Rose (which although wasn’t greatly accurate it is decently positive portrayal of Catholisism and I think does a decent job of showing evil). I heard from a friend who saw Deliver Us From Evil that it portrayed the church in a good light and had the message that primary evil does exist and is something that is truly dangerous and not just myth or fantasy. But I haven’t seen it so I can’t judge for myself.
 
I’m a horror movie buff and will eagerly wait for a free weekend to see this.

Not sure there’s supposed to be a message to these things besides “AHH AREN’T YOU SCARED ADRENALINE AHH THINGS POPPING OUT AT YOU.”

And what you’ll also hear - from me - is that there is a ton of swearing and profanity, practically every other word. Not sure how “in a good light” it portrays the church, as the priest doesn’t even wear his collar and his first scene (from what I saw before I got up and walked up) is him nursing a beer at a bar after a jog. So, if anyone’s planning to see it - be prepared for the seemingly never-ending barrage of F-bombs. 😦

I figured. My friend who told me about it probably has as much knowledge on the Catholic Church as a dog does about algebra:p so I did take it with a HUGE grain of salt. I’m still going to check it out because I’m a horror fan and the guy who made it iv liked in the past. Profanity doesn’t bother me in the least. I know it’s not good but it dosnt offend me.
 
Saw this movie on Saturday…
  • The priest doesn’t wear a collar because works undercover on the street in cooperation with the NYPD.
  • There is lots of profanity.
  • This is based on the casefiles from Ralph Sarchie. I’ve read his book and he now is someone who fully investigates cases of the demonic. He was convinced after what all he experienced that the Devil is a bigger threat than street crime.

I’m going to see this movie tonight. Looked up the USCCB rating, which is an “L”, and read what Steven D. Greydanus said about it at his Decent Film website. He gave it a “B”,3 stars for artistic value and a +2 for moral/spiritual value.

I didn’t even know that this movie was out there → I was reading an article about 3 visions of what Hell would be like as quoted by St. Theresa of Avila, St. Faustina, and Sr. Lucy (one of the 3 Fatima seers) and I heard this movie title mentioned. I thought it was a TV movie or something that had been on a few months ago or something.

Stephen D. Greydanus was a guest on Catholic Answers. He is a catholic who reviews movies for Catholics. He said as far as horror movies and possession movies go he liked it and it was a pretty good movie. Check it out on CA podcast
 
Hi,
I want to see this movie but my wife feels it will be a little scary for her so I will no doubt pick up the blu-ray when it comes out. An interesting thing I read about this is that Eric Bana, who plays Sarchie’s character, has gone from a non-believer to one who feels there is a higher power and that the world has forces of good and evil. Skeptically it is pissible this is just being said to help publicize the flick but I believe him. The lead female actor stated she was brought up spiritually but fell away when she grew up. After researching her role and reading Sarchie’s book, she has has come back to the faith. I am paraphrasing all this but I think I have the gist correct. It is my understanding Mr. Sarchie was on the set as a consultant.

Don’t forget to pick up some earmuffs with that Blu-Ray. There’s a constant barrage of F-bombs in the first few minutes alone. The Catholic Bishops Film Office rating of “L” (Problematic Content) is due in part to “frequent rough and crude language”:

Thanks very much for the tip. I can reluctantly handle hearing the f-word but taking the Lord’s name in vain is something I cannot let slip by.

BTW, we just got back from our first cruise on Royal Caribbean. The Catholic Mass in the big theatre on Sunday was well-attended and fantastic though there was not enough room in the seats to kneel. I got a shiver hearing all the familiar parts of the service in those unusual surroundings. The travelling priest has written some fictional books relating to mysteries aboard cruise ships but I cannot remember his name at the moment or the names of his books. I will have to find the list and share them. I remember he used to preside over funerals at Arlington Cemetary.

A fella I sat beside at the Mass later told me in passing he doesn’t believe people should pass their abortion opinions onto others. Boy, did I want to advise him of the flaws in that little throwaway statement but felt it was not the right time to get into it and also he was my elder. Thinking back, though, I wish I had said something back as I have lots I would have liked to say.
