I’ve noticed that even good Christians that hang out with the atheists a lot (for example, biologists) tend to be that way. I have no doubt that their noble intent might be to bring atheists to God, but the effort itself may be corrosive to the soul. Hence Pride, Arrogance, etc.

I’m not making this up about biologists…
The word for this type of generalization is bigotry. Even if 61% are atheist, that still leaves 39% that are not. Furthermore, the cause and effect may just as easily be understood as reverse to the assumptions made in this study. Specifically, it is equally likely that these fields attract atheists as produce them.

Yes, I over generalized. My apologies. But bigotry is saying I knew of one type-of-person like that, so all of those types-of-persons are like that. That was not the intent of my statement. Obviously, all people who hang out with atheists are not too arrogant, full of pride, etc. But I do know of many.

And on the second part of your response, it is possible that university faculty (which was the subject of the study) attracts more militant atheists - the ones who want to promote atheism and kill religion. But the breakdown by major I think is more revealing. Perhaps atheists are drawn to biology because they know that Darwinism provides some (minimal) rationale for a God-less world. But certainly a neutral student who is exposed to atheism in the classroom is more likely to become atheist than one who is not.

According to Box Office Mojo, Expelled held steady yesterday. It grossed a bit under $1 million, for an average of $911 per screen.

Its weekend gross of $3.2 million ranks it #9 among movies currently showing in the US.

FYI - I have pretty much decided to pass on this movie. I was here considering watching it, but if it is just another propaganda piece, I have better things to do. I also passed on* Sicko, Inconvenient Truth and 9/11.*

It seems that these movies are made primarily for like-minded thinkers to engage in groupthink.

Pretty impressive. If you figure 5 showings per day at $8/showing, that means about 23 people per show watched the film on it’s opening weekend. I don’t think that equates to a box office success.

I wonder what it cost to make this propaganda film?

Peace

Tim

A very good point – I agree.

I also think that those who are engaged in dialogue with atheists, trying to win them over – should not use this as an excuse to attack and ridicule others who they might disagree with.

We are called to try to win everyone to the truth – not just one focus group who has gained our attention.

I would certainly welcome any of the compassionate and gentle interest that is given to atheists. Perhaps this could help me convert to Darwinist-evolutionism.

The Wikipedia article says $3.5 million, but they don’t provide a source for that information.

Box Office Mojo sometimes lists the budget, but not this time. Incidentally, they downgraded Expelled’s weekend take to $3.0 million, which bumps it down to 10th place among currently showing movies.

I sense a great disturbance in “the force.” It’s probably the moderators getting ready to shut down another evolution based thread.

I have always said that the problem – with both the wider discussion and with this film in particular – is that they look only at the two extremes and ignore the vast range of opinion in the middle: the Catholic, Christian, and other theistic scientists, and the many Catholic theologians who accept evolution. I’m sure Barbarian, Orogeny, Chuck, Rossum and others might bear me out on my claim to consistency in this regard.
Yes, this is true. I recall the posting, even if I can’t remember the thread.

I just got back from seeing the movie. It was better than I expected. It’s worth the price of admission just to see Richard Dawkins at the end expound on his theory that life could have been seeded by an alien race. First he stresses how there cannot possibly be a God, then asserts that there could be aliens. All this with absolute seriousness. It was unbelievable.

This documentary is absolutely worth seeing. The reason that it is being criticized is because it exposes what is really going on in our “higher academic establishments.” It pushes the buttons of the “scientists” whose agenda and prejudice has become their reason for being. Darwinism has become their God even though it has recently been shot full of holes. Another thing I noticed was that even though it does not mention anything about homosexual activists it exposes some of the tactics they use too because homosexuality has become their God. Does anyone remember the word idolatry?! The cited scientists who mentioned intelligent design was a possible theory were subject to censorship, attack, demonization, loss of job, ridicule, and blacklisting. If you’d like to see if this is really happening just go to Massachusetts and stand in front of the State House with a pro-traditional marriage or pro-intelligent design sign. This is a huge threat to freedom in America and Ben Stein has rightfully attached the possible consequences to lettting this go on as it is now. Hitler was a well known believer in Darwinism and Margaret Sanger reportedly wanted to rid the world of all Blacks and “rejects” like the disabled. The signs are there and the past could repeat itself. Another world war, another holocaust, is that what we want? The only thing evil needs to take over is for good people to stand around and do nothing. Live the faith and take the offensive. Pray in public, take care of your parents, and glorify God in all that you do. Stand up for truth whenever and wherever the way our Lord and Savior did.

I saw the movie after receiving an email from the American Family Association (AFA@4fa.net) highly recommending it. I thought it was very worthwhile if you take your Faith seriously and mean what you say “they kingdom come” when you pray. Here are the quotes I copied from the AFA email that prompted us to see it:

**What others say about Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed:

Dr. James Dobson: “I recommend Expelled enthusiastically!”

Ken Smitherman, President, Association of Christian Schools: “We highly recommend Expelled to anybody.”

Lee Strobel, author, Case for a Creator: “See this film, bring your friends and your church.”

Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight, Knights of Columbus: “In Expelled, Ben Stein shows us what happens when academic freedom takes a day off. We should all be listening.”

Dr. Tom Woodward, Director, C.S. Lewis Society: “A cultural earthquake… Everyone I talked to after the screening used words like ‘fabulous’ and ‘incredible’.”**

A Darwinist blogger states that **"*Expelled ***a Box Office Success"

scienceblogs.com/intersection/2008/04/expelled_a_box_office_success.php

The long thread of comments after that post is fascinating.

I think Expelled is opening up some dialogue and perhaps dissipating some of the hostility and ridicule. Do we detect even a note of humility among some of the Darwinists on that site? I do hope so.
I meant the long thread after this post:

Since how the world was formed is a matter of science and not faith, why does viewing this film reflect on the Catholic faith? Furthermore, since the Church allows for the possibility of evolution, why is this a matter of faith?

I saw Expelled last weekend. More than just a few times Ben Stein explained that he was not a scientist nor could he accurately define Evolution or Intelligent Design. What he did say over and over again is that we have lost the freedom of enquiry in our class rooms.
He says this because of the many people that he has interviewed who have lost their jobs because they were not given their right, as scientists, to enquire freely. Darwin’s Evolution was the prime candidtate with the heaviest hand of a totalitarian demands placed on all students and teachers.

What is brought out, time and time again, are the Evolutionary professors who will not stand for the slightest difference of opinion. They immediately go into the attack mode. They will not stand for any difference of opinion.

I personnaly have found this to be true on various chat groups that I have been on. To give even the slightest doubt as to the validity of Evolution or Natural Selection is to invite high orders of ridicule and name calling.

Darwin’s Theory of Evolution was highly entrenched not only in Hitler’s Germany but also in Communist Russia. I believe the reason for this is rather simple. It would be difficult to force men to do inhuman acts of brutality and murder if they believed in God. Both Hitler and Stalin found the solution to this problem of control. They brought in Darwinian Evolution and so convinced a large part of the people to believe that God did not exist. With God not existing, human life became cheap, without value, and expendible. This was accomplished, thanks to Darwin.

In the mid-1930’s, in the USA, Darwin’s Evolution was waning badly. It was thought, at the time, that it would soon go away as just another wierd idea. (Hilair Belloc). Strangely, it didn’t go away. During WWII and after the world war, it came back stronger than ever. Why was that? It’s strictly conjecture on my part, however I believe it was the Communists that brought it over with them. The Communist were extremely successful in infiltrating our schools. Primary, secondary, and college level.

The Catholic Chruch does not endorse Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. It never has. John Paul II explained that of the many different forms of evolution, some can be thrown out all together and some sound like they may have merit. However, none of them are accepted at this time. He said this in a speech at the Pontifical Acadamy of Science.

The Roman Catholic Church spends a lot of time and money on science. This is science that has no political overtones. The Catholic Church believes that there are no contradictions between faith and science. Both are true. Faith being the higher and science looking for where the faith will take it.

John Paul II stated what at first will seem obvious.
“Truth does not contradict truth”.

Most conservative Christians and orthodox/traditional Catholics are quite familiar with ostracism and persecution from modern opinion-makers of every sort.

The fact that Expelled has received great distain from the movie-reviewing society will only confirm many such Christians and Catholics that Expelled must be on the right track. To get that much hatred from the secularist, artsy-left will actually be an encouragement.

Ben Stein was really targeting that overlooked segment of the public – facing tremendous critical backlash to provide a film for a segment of the public that rarely has anything in modern culture directed towards it.

How many Hollywood films directly affirm God as Expelled has done? I would say very, very few.

I’ve done further research to once again expose the fraud behind the movie ***Expelled-No Intelligence Allowed *** by locating on it’s official website the following:
The President’s Welcome
At Big Science Academy we take our motto seriously: “No Intelligence Allowed.”
*And this year, we are proud to report that in every subject but Science, students and faculty are free to challenge ideas, and seek truth wherever it may lead.
But Science is different. In Science, there is no room for dissent, for dissent is dangerous. That is why we at Big Science simply refuse to allow it. Like dancing, “dissent” can lead to other things.
As Class President Richard Dawkins put it so well: “Shut up!”
As you know…last year we had the misfortune of “presupposition of design” rearing its ugly head, with several students challenging Neo-Darwinian materialism, and arguing incessantly for the right to examine Intelligent Design.
They were all Expelled, of course – but still: it just goes to show where academic freedom can lead, if not shut down immediately!
Sincerely,
Charles Darwin
Principal, President, Admissions and Diversity Affairs Officer,
Big Science Academy “No Intelligence Allowed”

Charles Darwin did not write the above! Futhermore, he died in 1882. (I’ve saved a copy of the above from the website just incase they delete it. ) The movie Expelled is a hoax. They have fabricated a BIG FACT LIE by using Charles Darwin’s name and picture to promote their movie as noted above  then condemn him in the movie. Such dishonesty at this level is criminal.

I stand behind my last two posting to this topic.
