I don’t know if this goes here, it’s 1/3 rant, 1/3 questioning and 1/3 informing those out there who don’t know yet.
I recently went to rent a movie at a local video store (they have $1 mondays) and I went looking around and saw 4 shelves with porn on them!! Not crude movies with crude covers, but real porn! Some of them didn’t even cover the images!!! Thank goodness the naked women were covered by a yellow sheet inside the cover…but this is a place where children can go into!! Not an 18 or older establishment! There are always children running around in there, and these “films” are in plain sight! I decided I won’t go there anymore. Should I cancel my account and tell them why I am doing so?? Should I advise others I know to do the same?
 
I would think there would be rules about keeping adult films out in plain sight. I used to work at a video store, and I’ve been to a good many video stores in my day, and the adult video section is always in a seperate area, hidden by a curtain at the very least, and ours was monitored by video camera. I’d certainly bring it to somebody’s attention, at the very least. See if you can’t find regulations about keeping adult films sectioned off or, at the very least, with blacked out covers. It’s totally not cool for a place that has kids running around to put that stuff out in plain sight. Even Suncoast, a video seller, has the decency to black out the covers of the dirty movies. If you feel really bothered by it, do cancel your membership, since that’s definitely not acceptable.
 
Some of them have covers, but its not like the kids can’t read. I mean, come on, if it has these titles (which I won’t type cuz its disgusting) thats more than they should be seeing. I wrote the cooperate offices, but I’m thinking I might have to call the actual store and talk to them.
 
I would definitely cancel my membership AND let them know the reason. It does no good to cancel and not let them know the reason.
 
I joined Netflix. It’s cheap, fast, and has waaaaaayyyyy more movies that Blockbuster ever dreamed of.
 
Just a quick update…I mailed a letter to the DA of Oregon and he actually called me back!! He asked me for more information about the store (location, name etc.) and he said that he is going to look into the ordinances and stuff and see if they are doing anything illegal. If they aren’t, someone will go down there and tell them that the norm for those kinds of things is to have them in a seperate location under video survellience!!! He said that it is definitly innappropriate for those videos to be in plain sight of children. Just thought ya’ll would like to know that not all lawyers are slimy!!
 
On my cable system it is about 5 button pushes and I have porn on my TV. We are living in a more difficult world than our parents did.

Get out of there fast - it’s just such a bad influence for both children and adults. Although alot of movies these days have too provocative covers, plenty of video stores do not rent porn.
