Hi there,
I coach the speech team at the Catholic school where I work. Two boys are are doing a Duet (a two-person, about 10-minute sort of play that they did not write). It is a spoof on the Titanic. I helped them with it last week. However, I have concerns about this:
I’m worried that their play is inappropriate. I wish I’d heard about what they were doing before they started (I’m not the head speech coach and didn’t know what they were doing until last week). I also know that the other coaches would not be pleased if I ask them to stop doing this play, nor would the boys themselves as they’ve already worked on it rather extensively. However, none of this matters if it’s sinful for me to allow them to do this.
Does anyone have any suggestions regarding what I should do? I want to teach them that everything we do needs to be in the context of Christ, and hope to do that more as time goes on in a way that they will respond well to (especially because one of the boys wants to do an Informative speech, which is another event, on the gay rights movement, and I already told him he couldn’t unless in was teaching about Church teaching, but did it in a conversational way that he surprisingly didn’t completely reject).

- I consider the movie Titanic to be inappropriate, especially for adolescents and younger.
- There are references to the inappropriate parts (for example, one part sarcastically makes fun of the fact that Jack and Kate are sexually involved despite the “morally dubious” situation, as they phrase it).
- They use some sexual references (for example, the one who plays Jack states something like “Later, I will be soaking wet, and girls will find this attractive even though I have the body of a 12-year-old boy”; it’s making fun of Leonardo DiCaprio’s odd attraction to woman, but it’s making a joke out of lust).
