Movie The Purge

I realize this is an older movie and that there are 2 sequels to it, which I have not seen, but I had to sit thru the first Purge movie yesterday. I was at a friends house and unfortunately this is the movie they wanted to watch. I am surprised how popular this movie is with so many people.

The plot was terrible as well as some parts of the movie making no sense, like the multiple times the wife could have retrieved guns from the invaders who had been shot in the home, the black guy who was tied to a chair, but apparently the 10-15 invaders did not find him when they first broke in, and he was nowhere to be found until the end.

The part about the daughters boyfriend sneaking into the house, but then being shot and killed by her dad, was just dumb, I cant figure why that part was not dropped altogether.

The major problem with the plot imo, in a situation like that, where crime is legal for 24 hours, why would murder be the main crime everyone seems to take part in and focus on? Seems like if that really happened, what would stop some evil person from just stealing a nuclear sub and drop a bomb?

The other implication that scares me, is that many people like this idea, of a purge, and that simply killing off ‘undesirables’ is the best way to achieve a successful society.

All those Purge movies are lame. 2 hrs of senseless violence, w utterly zero redeeming qualities.

They are sick twisted movies. Unfortunately I have seen the next movie as well, all glorifying killing and violence.

I thing I don’t understand is: The movie’s premise is that all crime (not just violent crime, but any crime) is legal for 24 hours. Why not take the occasion to rip that tag off the mattress?

Actually, I thought the message was more focused on what happens to humans if all rules are taken away from them. Of course you get things like theft, but murder is the big one. If you’re brought up to believe that you can legally commit murder for one night every year with no repercussions, then what’s left to stop you? Yes, ethics and morals, but if you believed, as the masked people did in the film, that you were doing the right thing, why would you stop? And then how do you live with your friends and neighbours afterwards, knowing that they tried to kill you?

Well, yes that was the point of the movie…for the affluent to kill off all the undesirables, or leaches on society, in their opinion, they were doing evil for the good of the upper class.

Even if murder was legal for one day, personally I cant think of anyone I would want to kill.

Right. But I don’t think the film was pushing that idea, just some of the characters, who were portrayed as the worst people.
