Hey everybody,

This is my first post here but I wanted to pose this question to all of you. Ive been dating someone for about four months now and Ive been noticing of late that shes been watching movies that in my mind would be inappropriate and sinful. Some of the movies she has watched have some nudity in them, which seems to be a more and more reocurring thing in movies nowadays which is very sad.

Am I being to hypocritical for this or should I just let it slide? What is the right thing to do in this situation. We’ve both talked about this before but just recently its come more to me that its an issue for me because I don’t want someone who could be my potential wife to be ok with some of these movies that show the human body in ways i feel is appropriate.

Thanks!

I hear you. I’m very uncomfortable watching films with nudity even though others seem desensitized to it. Which is sad, I think.
I use the “fast forward” button on my remote a lot these days.

This issue surfaces in our house from time to time…nudity, language, whatever. I just find something else to do.

I cannot see that you are being hypocritical in any way. I would also not suggest you let it slide. If you care for this woman, you want the best for her and that includes spiritually. Encourage her to find other entertainment! She, too, should want what is best for you and therefore should not be encouraging you to watch what you feel is sinful.

May I ask, is she Catholic or have most of the same beliefs as you?

I personally do not have an issue with nudity in movies per se, as long as it is integral to the story line and done tastefully and not gratuitously. This is a personal thing however.

If this makes you uncomfortable or worse, do not supress it. It is much easier to bring things out into the open early in a relationship than letting them fester for years and then bringing them up.

Certainly, do not be confrontational or accusatory. You might bring it up as if it is a problem you have, not a problem related to her. What ever you do, bring it up and discuss it.

Talk to her about it, but where in a normal conversation you would say “I don’t like you watching these movies” say instead “These movies make me feel uncomfortable”. Take the focus off of her (I would barely even bring up the fact that she actually watches them) and put the focus onto the movies themselves. Be sure to attack the movies, not her. Here’s a challenge, write up what you are going to say to her that expresses all your feelings on the issue without ever using the word “you”. Then she will not feel attacked.

You are perfectly right to feel morally offended by such movies! I used to watch movies which contained sexual content without a lick of regret, but have more recently begun to get offended and even a bit angry at the immorality of movies - I thank Jesus all the time for giving me the grace to see this type of vulgarity with His eyes. I try so hard to live my life in imitation of Him and it would be a shame to let enjoyment of offensive material get in the way of this goal.

If you think there is a real future with your girlfriend and think that there is a probability of marriage, you owe it to yourself and to her to be honest about who you are, especially where values are concerned. Can’t you just tell her that you find these movies morally offensive and that you’d be more comfortable if you didn’t have to watch them?

I’m telling you, if you were my date, I’d be super impressed and it would make me think twice about my enjoyment of that type of movie. She will probably have the utmost respect for you, not only because you’re decent, but because you are honest.

I say tell her. 👍

And if she doesn’t appreciate your decency (which is SO RARE these days), then maybe you should move on. Believe me, there are women out there who would sell a kidney for a decent guy!

If you believe in human decency and this is a friend, say so. Nudity is never an integral part of a movie or TV show. Too many Catholics have become insensitive to portrayals of nudity. I’m a professional writer and everything I do must take my beliefs into account. In a relationship with God, who calls me friend, I want to remain in His friendship. I will have to give an account for all of my actions at the last judgement.

Too many people think that if something is common, then it must be alright. Believe me, there was a time when nudity and vulgar language did not appear in movies or TV programs.

Peace,
Ed

Forget the nudity, per se. I can think of a few wonderful films that contained some nudity - The English Patient for instance. Why has no one mentioned violence?

(The following applies to adults watching movies, not children. I realize they aren’t old enough to look beyond the immediate images to the more subtle aspects of a movie.)

Instead, how about considering the message of the movie instead. Is it ultimately shedding light on the importance of respect? Or is it glamorizing greed? Is it reinforcing the differences between us, or suggesting we understand people that are different than us? It isn’t always as simple as the good guys winning and the bad guys loosing.

Don’t get hung up on the nudity, look deeper to the message.

I agree with what you are trying to get across, but to me, nudity just ruins a meant-to-be-great movie. <— I am referring to the movies where the nudity part is pointless!! I mean, c’mon, why pollute a movie with a sexual scene??? To me, it’s just like looking in somebody’s window…it’s wrong. What ever happened to keeping sexuality sacred?? It’s saddens me to have to fast-forward the **one part **in a GREAT movie that has been ruined by the sexual scene. 😦 What is this world coming to?

I agree. I have never seen a movie in which sex could not have just as easily been hinted at (think they kiss on a bed, cue the romantic music and the camera looks upwards at the stars). I know that the fact that 2 people have sex is sometimes integral to the plot-line, but it doesn’t mean they have to show it.

The world is already there. 😦

I too feel gratuitous nudity and sex is insulting to the audience’s intelligence. Look how they did the scene between Robert Redford and the woman assassin in “The Sting”. They went into the room together, late at night. He wakes up alone in her bed. We get it. We know what happened. Why do we need to see any more than that? 🤷

I agree with the poster who said they used to watch movies with certain content and think nothing of it. I think this is a statement of where we are as humans. We have seen so much, that we no longer think anything of it. I remember when we were kids and there was not such bad things on regular tv. Now we are bombarded with all types of things. Not only in movies and programs, but commercials too. Kids are being exposed to too much information. Very little of it good! There are very few things you can watch which would be okay for kids of any age. Where is the true ‘family programming’? Several months ago, I pretty much stopped watching everything. I watch cooking shows and sometimes the shopping channel. Other than EWTN there is really nothing else on that doesn’t make you cringe with images or language!

You are soo right! All we need is two seconds to see that “something” is going on…or they could simply mention it later…It’s so sad that those scenes are what are wanted these days.😊

Nudity is not a ‘hang up.’ It is a problem in movies and TV. Movies are rarely meant to be educational unless they are documentaries or instructional films. I think even little kids understand that Arnold Scwarzennegar is not an android under his skin.

Ed

Hm, still no one has condemned violence more than nudity? Interesting.

My friend to be hypocritical on this subject you would need to be a nudist who dislikes movie nudity… 😉

I think it’s a minor issue. A lot of ‘good’ movies use nudity in the context of the storyline, and the same goes for sex; PatThompson mentioned The English Patient which is a great example. I don’t think it’s anything to be offended by or afraid of. The human body is a beautiful thing, and is nothing to be ashamed of. How would you cope if you became a doctor? I’d say your girlfriend is watching these movies because they are good movies, not for sexual pleasure. Kick back, relax, and enjoy the film with her I say.

Nudity is ‘rare’ and more ‘prohibit’ then violence. Even though violence is far worse than nudity, since the naked body (when done well) can be tasteful and artsy for an important purpose in a movie.

example,
dailymotion.com/video/x3msf4_ave-maria-sarah-brightman_music

I think violence is worse than nudity in general, but it depends on both.
Nudity in any form of entertainment can never be done well. I heard all the artistic types complaining in 1968 about wanting their freedom. All they gave back was porn.

Ed
