Movies and Nudity

My friend to be hypocritical on this subject you would need to be a nudist who dislikes movie nudity… 😉

I think it’s a minor issue. A lot of ‘good’ movies use nudity in the context of the storyline, and the same goes for sex; PatThompson mentioned The English Patient which is a great example. I don’t think it’s anything to be offended by or afraid of. The human body is a beautiful thing, and is nothing to be ashamed of. How would you cope if you became a doctor? I’d say your girlfriend is watching these movies because they are good movies, not for sexual pleasure. Kick back, relax, and enjoy the film with her I say.
The human body should never be nude in a movie. I have no problem with nudity in health care when it is necessary. I worked in health care for almost 10 years.

The human body should never be exploited for a movie.

Peace,
Ed

Nudity in any form of entertainment can never be done well. I heard all the artistic types complaining in 1968 about wanting their freedom. All they gave back was porn.

Peace,
Ed

What the hell? Having nudity in a movie doesn’t necessitate sexual intercourse, neither is it pornographic. You can ‘thrust’ and ‘moan’ without taking your clothes off.

Seriously guys, you won’t go to the beach because of some skin? And why are you looking at teenagers? You go to the beach to swim, surf, relax, have fun, etc. not to perve.

Shadark,

You have entered the Catholic Taliban zone. A place where violence is accepted but the slightest bit of human skin may imperil the universe. Any girl that wears a bikini is immoral and deserves a whipping or stoning and “honor” killings are a virtue.

Interesting thread.

When Ingmar Bergman showed a young medieval girl being raped in
“The Virgin Spring” and the slobbering face of the rapist (he was ugly, too),
it was way worse than any nudity could be. As a matter of fact, we got the message without nudity. The wanton ecstasy on the rapist’s face and the dispairing face of the girl robbed everyone of their innocence.

Nudity isn’t always the issue. It’s what’s behind it.

I have only seen two movies in my entire life in which I would say the nudity is acceptable.

The first is in Schinlder’s list. There was simply no way to show the true horror of the concentration camps without the scenes where all of the camp members were stripped naked and inspected. Yes that scene is incredibly difficult to watch, but that is the whole point. It’s supposed to be disgusting.

The other is Andrei Rublev. There is a scene where the main character comes across a pagain ritual, and gets tied to a post and a nude woman attempts to seduce him. Because of the nudity in the scene, you really feel what the monk is going through instead of just thinking in your mind “oh I guess he’s being tempted right now”.

However besides those two cases, I am opposed to all other nudity I have seen in films, and I have seen a LOT of movies with nudity in them.

As to people that say that nudity isn’t all that important, and you should look for the deeper message. To an extent you are right. A film can have nudity in it and still have some wonderful things about it. I have seen a few films that I would classify like that. However when you start saying that it is ok to have morally unacceptable things in a film so long as the overall message is on the good side, I think you are seriously lowering your standards. We should never accept some bad things just as long as there is more good. We should always strive for as much good and as little bad as possible.

I guess this is the sort of thing that no longer phases me, although that means it isn’t causing me to lustful, so…

Hey everybody,

This is my first post here but I wanted to pose this question to all of you. Ive been dating someone for about four months now and Ive been noticing of late that shes been watching movies that in my mind would be inappropriate and sinful. Some of the movies she has watched have some nudity in them, which seems to be a more and more reocurring thing in movies nowadays which is very sad.

Am I being to hypocritical for this or should I just let it slide? What is the right thing to do in this situation. We’ve both talked about this before but just recently its come more to me that its an issue for me because I don’t want someone who could be my potential wife to be ok with some of these movies that show the human body in ways i feel is appropriate.

Thanks!
One of the best movies I ever saw was Tom Cruise in “Top Gun.” Then, all of a sudden, in the middle of this movie, they threw in a sex scene which was really out of character for the rest of the movie. And this was back in 1986.

First you say you are ‘dating’ someone and later you say you might marry her. Does she feel this way too? What is her opinion on watching movies with nudity and sex scenes?

If you feel you are being hypocritical, does that mean you are doing the same thing?? My opinion is that your problem isn’t being hypocritical, it’s being controlling. And it seems you are covering that up with the subject matter you’ve been complaining about in your post.

Think carefully about it.

Hmm, nudity, to my mind, doesn’t always mean sex in movies. There are other reasons for nudity.

But do people think that nudity in paintings and other static art forms is bad? What about that Leda and the Swan painting? Very sexual, and very beautiful, but people don’t seem to get up in arms about it.

I think gratuitous violence in movies is just as bad. While a lot of films have gratuitous nudity or sex that seems to be there only to bring in viewers, many movies are based around rather immoral violent plot-lines that extol violence as a virtue - violence is the whole point of the movie, or often of the video game.

If I had the Authority, I would immediatly condemn that painting, as would any true Savonarolian.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: This is hilarious!! Great post and my sentiments exactly. This is goody-two-shoes level for me…lol I’ve never seen “perve” as a verb! LOL

How nice that you find Near Occasions of Sin funny.
My goodness…seeing women on the beach? Am I supposed to wear horse blinders when I go out to eat for fear of seeing a good-looking woman? Or at the mall? Are we to create a Middle Eastern burka-wearing culture so I don’t find “near occasions of sin?” I have to say on this one you’re going off the deep-end. I see no near occasion of sin. This is being overly-scrupulous to an unhealthy point. And if you notice, I laughed at his verb, “to perve.” As some of my students would say, “take a chill pill!”
