I just saw this movie today with my family
I enjoyed it, I wish the ending was more clarified, as to what happened to Calles, and the General
The General died that day. He was killed on June 2, 1929. Had he not stayed behind to help the wounded priest, he might have gotten away. He chose the more noble path. Calles left office shortly after that.
Calles stayed as a potent political figure for years, though, and founded the political party that became the modern PRI, which ruled most of Mexico for about 70 years and is likely to regain the presidency (unfortunately).

So I want to see the movie that just came out, for Greater Glory. I want to see this movie really bad because it has a lot of history from my family. My great grand parents fought in the Cristero war and fought against the government. Some of my great uncles died in this war preventing government officials from entering their homes forcefully. I also have a distant family member who was beatified a saint during this war.

For those who have seen the movie is it worth watching? Is it accurate historically and is the story line good?

Also what would be your opinions about the war, do you think this war was justified, or did it not happen? I have heard some arguments from both people saying that this war was justified and others who say that this war didn’t need to happen. People use the arguments like Jesus telling Peter to put away his sword and other similar arguments. Opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the movie is absolutely worth watching.
That the Cristero War produced canonized saints and blesseds
should be a good lesson to us about the importance of
standing up for religious freedom
and witnessing for Christ.

:blessyou:

THIS 👍

I have seen the movie twice.

Unfortunately, it is now out of all the first run theaters in Chicago and is back to very limited distribution. I checked the newspaper just now and it is playing in three theaters
and our metropolitan area is 10 million, with several million Catholics.

It will probably be out of theaters here late next week. You can always buy or rent the DVD.

This showed up in the Knights of Columbus Wikipedia article, and it dismayed me quite a bit.
The Knights have been criticized for a hyperbolic historical comparison in the context of Catholic opposition to the federal contraception mandate in 2011 and 2012. The cover of the May 2012 issue of its monthly magazine Columbia showed a Cristero fighter and the contents made the connection explicit without acknowledging the difference in severity between the two historical episodes or disavowing the implicit endorsement of violent opposition.
The reference given is this blog from the rag US Catholic: uscatholic.org/blog/2012/05/rifle-crucifix

First of all, I don’t think you’d meet any Knight who thought that violent opposition to the HHS Mandate or even to the Obama Administration would be a good idea. If only for the simple fact that Catholics are in a significant minority here in the US, and we … wouldn’t win. Diplomacy is called for on every level here. When diplomacy fails, we will utilize civil disobedience, and the opportunity for that phase has nearly arrived.

Secondly, I don’t think you’d meet a faithful Catholic who wouldn’t admit that the story of the Cristero War is a cautionary tale, a possible dystopian future, a warning about what may happen if this HHS mandate is upheld. Freedoms are rarely yanked away wholesale all in one piece. Freedoms are eroded, bit by bit, sometimes imperceptibly, until suddenly you wake up one day and your life has changed entirely.

The unanimous voice of all our bishops is a clarion call to action, and the Knights of Columbus are responding to that call. We are ready to defend the Church in every way we can, and we are unashamed to say so.

I wish it was comming here, can’t find any word of when though. Dvd might be the choice for me!

Wow. That would be amazing to be related to a saint! Also you said he/she was beatified a saint. Do you mean he/she was canonized a saint or are they a blessed?

The audience give this movie 4.5 stars. Why are the critics so anti-For Greater Glory? This movie might make all of its profits from DVD sales. I’ll wait for it on Blu-ray.

It was out of the first run theatres here last week.

Fortunately we have a Catholic owned secod run theatre and they are showing the film this weekend.🙂

I just saw it in the theatre recently. It was decent. I am not a fan of the shaky cam style of filming that was used in some of the action scenes. That is a minor flaw though. There was a lot of characters and a lot going on. I felt it didn’t have enough character development to keep me interested. Which is why I fell asleep for about 10 minutes. Its good to see a clean Catholic film in theatres none the less. I hope they can make a resonable profit from it.

It is definitely worth watching. That is so amazing that some of your relatives fought with the Cristeros. You should be proud of them. As far as I know the movie is historically accurate. There were alot of different characters, as another poster pointed out, however I didn’t find it hard to follow. I did have trouble keeping the names straight, but that’s me for you. 😛

As to being justified… yeah, I think once government officials start breaking into churches and murdering the people there, you can safely say that a war against them is justified. Jesus did tell Peter to put down the sword, but Peter was trying to defend Jesus from the soldiers, and Jesus had already decided to go through it. Cant have some sword-swinging apostle messing up Jesus’s plans. 😉 The Bible says there is a time for peace and a time for war.

All in all, the movie is inspiring, tear-jerking, and a warning of what could happen if we don’t defend religious freedom.

Just out of curiosity, what was the name of the relative you have who was beatified?

I know I am so late to this, but I saw the movie today! Wow, I feel so guilty for taking my faith for granted!!! I am deeply moved after this today. What an amazing movie, so well done. I am ashamed I had no idea about this part of our catholic history. It rings so true for our situation in the US today, let us all unite against Obama care!

What is sad is that most Americans and even most Mexicans don’t know what sort of man he was. The same sort of man who came to power in Spain, but who were overthrown by Franco. Such information is concealed because of anti-Catholicism.

The critics are anti-Catholic. The McClatchy critic --who may be a liberal Catholic–dismisses it as propoganda. But it depicts Calles as he was and shows what he actually did, without turning him into a devil. Very much like Lenin, or the socialists who took over Spain.

I would have focused more on Gonzalez, the spiritual leader of the Cristianos. Once they took him out, it became just another civil war.

I would not dismiss all critics of the film as anti-Catholic. I didn’t think it was that great of a film and I’m a very faithful Catholic. I’m of a minority I know. I believe that a lot of critics did not like the quality of the film making and find it artistically lacking. I found the film lacking in character development and found the overall narritive confusing and did not really think the transformation of the charcters to be very convincing. I did not think it a bad film just not a great one.It reminded me of Braveheart in many aspects. I would like to see the same subjet matter done in a better film. Maybe an inspiring documentry. I don’t endorse the film as one to watch or one to avoid. Take it or leave it. Not sure it will appeal to non-Catholics. A good and important subject matter does not make a great film.

Instead i would recommand ‘Of Gods and Men’ or A Man For All Seasons’ for similar subject matter and much better film making.

Well, I finally saw it yesterday, and I THOUGHT that Eva Longoria was one of the characters, and I was right. I find it disgraceful that she would appear in a movie depicting the crushing of religious freedom, yet today SHE is a sycophant of a man who has contempt for the Christian faith AND its people, and is doing everything he can to trample religious liberty. YES, I’m talking of Obama. Eva Longoria, you are shameful, and the farthest thing from a woman who stands for the faith. :nope:!!! Rob
