It would look like the stark crumbling of Goofball Island, for starters, and it would also look like – oh, wait, it would look like practically every scene in “Inside Out.” I honestly don’t know how it’s even statistically possibly that I’m one of the only people to have seen this movie as an illustration of clinical depression. Pixar could practically license some of the scenes for usage on anti-depressant commercials. 🤷
There is a major difference between the film plotline and chronic depression, in that there is a triggering occurrence: the family move.

In chronic depression, also, I’d imagine that mind and body functioning would be drastically subdued, the Train of Thought would be permanently stalled, the maintenance crews and memory managers would be in mutiny, and no-one would be manning the controls. The color-coded spheres would be cascading directly into the memory dump because no-one would be there to catalog them.

The movie is very accurate especially when we hit puberty, we get different emotions at weird moments, and stuff that we used to like is not the same anymore. I taught it was a good movie.

I think what also helped was that: POSSIBLE SPOILERS below- highlight

Riley had a functional supportive family. Not perfect but supportive.

During Joy’s epiphany, she mentioned that others cheered Riley up, because Riley expressed her feelings.

But what if Riley had expressed her sadness and was met with an apathetic “suck it up” or “quit whining” attitude? In a dysfunctional family, this event could have potentially contributed to depression or at least bad coping mechanisms.

At the end, the emotions recognized how Sadness saved the day, but if Riley’s sorrow had been met with negativity, they probably would have criticized Sadness. Sadness would mope and run off somewhere. Anger would try to take over again. Joy would be lost. Overall, things would stop functioning and slowly Riley could end up with depression.
