They also said the Blair witch was based on a true story as well.🤷
You might be surprised how much or how little of the actual events need to be added into a movie, for them to use the term “based on a true story” And still in a way be technically right.
you might be supprised how much of this particular movie however, is actually based on very real events. If you want to compare your self, you can read the book The Rite: The making of a modern exorcist, then watch the movie. Accroding to the USSCB review however it’s basically this:

The possestion sceens are all very well done, and extremely accurate. This comes directly from the book, throwing up nails, frogs and other items.

Beleive it or not, the hollywood parts of the movie are is the Priest struggling with faith. Not hollywood in the sense that there aren’t preists like the one portrayed, but hollywood in the sense that the real subject of the original story (the book) had no such struggle. He always believed in hell, he always believed in sin, he always believed in God and always believed in redemption. These weren’t the problems. What he wasn’t prepared for was what exactly happens in a real exorcism.

I haven’t seen the movie, but it sounds nothing like the book. In the book, the main character is a 53 year old man who has been a priest for a long time, and decides to take a sabatical in Rome to learn about exorcism. In the movie, he is a young man fresh out of seminary school. In the book, Father Gary does not struggle with his faith, he just is very careful about not believing in exorcism all at once. I don’t think I would like the movie, it sounds very sensational, while the book is very informative about Catholic faith, exorcisms, etc.

Not sure that this movie did anything more than chronicle an event and/or show that every man is weak to evil, whether he knows it or not.

Watch The Rite Movie. It’s speaks also about religion and the beliefs of someone in some things he discovers or going too. A lot of informative details also.
