Sorry 'bout that, but that is how low budget movies with out a big advertising deal are heard about. Word of mouth is the best advertising out there and it doesn’t cost the studio a penny! That’s how I’ve heard of some of the best movies I’ve seen.

It was…bad. Slightly entertaining, in a train wreck sort of way.

Q: When is a vampire not a vampire?

A: When it goes out in daylight, sees itself in a mirror, doesn’t drink human blood, and still manages to suck.
:yup:
My exact conversation with my husband on the way home from the movie this evening. (Besides apologizing for having subjected him to not only a “chick flick” but a “teeny bopper chick flick.”

Sorry, guys. They just were NOT vampires.

I will give the film one 👍 for the intro and the repeat at the studio… “I never thought much about dieing…”

If these “vampires” didn’t even conform to a majority of the conventions of vampirism (nocturnal, allergy to garlic, etc.) except for bloodsucking, why not just call them “human mosquitoes”? 😃

Well, I for one do not care what the critics (who haven’t read the books) say about the movie. I love the books, and the movie is a breath of what the books are, but a compliment. If people are actually interested in WHY the MOTHERS are FANS of these books (what a concept) this is a really good article from the Wall Street Journal on the books, which solidifies our love and talks about the books being pro-abstinence and well they are pro-life too. The article is titled “TRUE LOVE WAITS.”

I am 35 and loved the movie and even more the books… What does that say about me? I guess I know more than the casual movie goer because I read the books.

For the people who keep posting that this movie doesn’t conform to the “typical” vampire stereotype… Well that is the point.

What you all don’t get it the whole point in the books, the struggle the Cullen family (the main vampire family) is going through, that Edward (the main vampire) is going through. Stephenie Meyer did a great job of showing the personal battles they have with good vs evil. Often similar to the battles we humans have. There are so many conversation in the books you have missed. Edward is trying to figure out where his soul will even go, if he has one when he dies. He makes decisions (along with the rest of the family) based on if I can get there I need to make sure I live this life in the best way I can (why they are vegetarians)… There is such an emphasis on how precious life is. Also how forgiving and giving God is. They are the most evil being that can exists, monsters, but they live their lives seeking constant redemption for who they are, from God. Some struggle to know if that is even possible. These vampires are an anomaly even in their own world. The majority of vampires you meet through the books are bad (well at least not vegetarians). But, that gives you the perspective on how much you can over come when you put your mind to it. On top of that they are so affected by this common human girl and she brings this common human world back to them with an even bigger appreciation. The fourth book is my favorite because of its pro-life stance…

If the books/movie is really concerned about chastity, why have a vampire setting? A vampire is NOT about chastity. Ledgends of vampires, as a matter of fact, correspond to nocturnal emissions for men. Remember Dracula? By Bram Stoker? That was pro-chastity, too. AND, it was a reflection of Stoker’s zeitgeist…as is this movie for this author.

How does this fail, if one wants to argue pro abstinence? They cast/wrote in a good looking protaganist. I’d be a lot more inclined to think this was pro abstinance if the lead looked like the love child of Quasimodo and Count Orlock.

And stop humouring the movie by referring to the vampires as vegitarians. Vampires take life, whether blood or psychic energy. That’s how they do. Blood is not a vegetable. Even non-human blood is not a vegetable.

And, that’s all we need, the vampire redefined…again… Perhaps Edward and Lestat should converse.

Lastly, not reading the books should matter. I’m not reviewing/opining on the book. The title of this thread is, “MOVIES: Twilight”. I’m commenting on the movie. If ~I~ don’t get it because I didn’t read the book, that’s not my fault, that is the movie’s fault. It is the movie’s job to present a coherent story. Harry Potter 1 & 2 succeeded with this. HP 4 FAILED…MISERABLY. Same thing here. If there was something more I should have understood about Edward’s psyche, then the movie should have gotten into that instead of Bella being so into him.

I understand what you are saying about the movie failing if you didn’t get the point the books were trying to get across… That makes some sense. But, on the end of the readers of the books, it is only natural for us to defend the points from the books. Everything you say about vampires is true, about them NOT being about Chasity. These vampires also didn’t have the choice in becoming what they are just who they are… See the difference. It is even more enticing and thought provoking because Edward IS beautiful. You think only ugly people are chaste? I understand completely that this is about the movie, but as a fan of the book I will naturally feel the need to say, well that isn’t what the book is about. Most books based on movies get it wrong. I liked this movie, but I loved the books.

Now for the vegetarian comment, that is what the family addresses themselves as, that is why we address them as that. They abstain from drinking human blood.

As for Edward talking to Lesat, well that is something else the movie goer misses from the books, and well the other movies are set to be made. There is a background, and those type of Vampires. That comes in with the other books more. You get a bit of it with the Nomads in this movie/book, but more in New Moon.

Overall, I am happy with the movie and books being loved by only the fans. I am good with the rest of the world not understanding, liking, or getting it. To each their own.

AmyS 👍 Wow, you are amazing! I love your post about the struggle between good and evil 👍

My husband said that the vatican site doesn’t have a “teaching on vampires” because VAMPIRES ARE NOT REAL! Same reason they don’t have one on unicorns or other fictional creations.
I was like, yeah if someone in real life claimed to be a vampire (and meant it) asked for my blood I’d laugh and call the cops.

Yes I know there are crazy people out there who do blood rituals  But vampires are FICTIONAL and those people need therapy.

Many vampires (fiction) do not have a choice. As a matter of fact, all of them don’t. I know the big thing now is to romanticize and philosophize the vampire, but, when a vampire was turned in fiction or folklore, it was akin to a rape. Dracula held mina to him to drink his blood as a bad child forces a kitten’s head down to drink milk (book). We’ve seen this again recently, the brooding vampire in Louis in “Interview with the Vampire”, the vampire in “Moonlight,” and Bill in “True Blood.” None of them had a choice. …Neither did Lucy in Dracula ('92 movie) to think about it. Dracula went after her because (I think) he was losing the love of his life…again, but, now he could do something pro-actively. Spoilers involved about Dracula '92:
It is perverse, what Dracula did to Lucy in the '92 version because, the movie IS SO very Christocentric and Copolla really captures so many things perfectly, about a man rejecting God and God’s forgiveness. Anyway, yes, Dracula being pro-active in biting Lucy; he was renewing the vows he took initially to reject God. It was such a perversion of baptism and the Eucharist and the Priesthood what he did to Lucy that night. Instead of waiting until he couldn’t have the love of his life anymore, and rejecting God afterwards, he now has the ability to reject God and punnish humanity and make the woman he love suffer on what should be the happiest time of her life simultaneously as she rejects him.
**End **

…Incidentally, I saw Matrix Reloaded over the weekend. There’s a scene shared with Keanu Reeves and Monica Bellucci. In the background, either a '70s Dracula movie is playing or ‘Brides of Dracula’ or something (though, I’m pretty sure there’s a close up on the Mina character). I thought this was cute, if not intentional, because in the '92 Dracula movie, there’s a few scenes shared between Reeves & Bellucci (he was Harker, she was a Bride, you see). …Just some trivia in case you’re ever on Jeopardy or playing Trivial Pursuit or something.

While it’s all well and good that Bella’s advances are constantly rejected by Edward to turn her, this is the exception, not the rule.

And, no, I wasn’t saying that only ugly people can be chaste. Far from that. What I’m saying is that if one wants to promote chastity, don’t have a guy that makes tween girls squee and fantasize about and wait in line at 4 in the morning for 5 hours so that said good looking guy can sign a shirt with his face on it, that the girl can hug in bed every night. Don’t have a book where it’s a romance novel for the daughters of the women who read romance novels.
Now for the vegetarian comment, that is what the family addresses themselves as, that is why we address them as that. They abstain from drinking human blood.
It’s a re-definition. As much as the jacket covers are redifining what is black and white and red all over.

The Collin’s family isn’t the first to do such a thing as of late. I don’t want anything garnering this is a novel idea.

That’s the third book, right? May the movie be more enlightening on this, then.

Is this an elect/eletist thing, then?

The Vatican doesn’t have a teaching because the Church condones drinking blood. They don’t need to have a teaching officially when drinking blood is not in oposition to God.

Vampires do not ask random people.

I don’t think you know as much as you think you know. I resent you diagnosing and condemning people. Please, please don’t.

🤷 I wasn’t condemning anybody. 🤷

Of course vampires don’t ask random people, because they are fictional creatures. If you believe there to be real vampires, that is a whole other issues. The vampires I were referring to are fictional, imaginary, non-existant.

Back on Topic:

Not a single person I’ve talked to in person (not on the internet) has said they hated the movie 👍 I’m pleased with it, and the interpretation of the fictional book.

I enjoyed the movie AND the books. 👍 Then again, I enjoy brain candy. My DH, who has not read the books, got the movie. 🙂 I like the different portrayal of vampires.

Just wanted to put my :twocents: in. I LOVED the books and the movie! I’ve seen the movie twice with two of my girlfriends and we’ll probably go again once they finish reading book 4. Absolutely loved the books!
On a side note, has anyone read her other book “The Host”? Just wondering if it’s as good as the Twilight series. I know it’s not about vampires, but just wondering if it’s any good.

I loved The Host. It was very different from what I expected and very good.

I’m glad to see all these good reviews on the movie Twilight. My SIL said she thought the movie was actually better than the book. I’m thinking I’ll end up renting it–it’s just not something I think DH will enjoy, so I’ll rent it someday while he’s at work.

.
Someone help me here, if I’m wrong. But, the Church CONDONES drinking blood??? Are you actually saying that the Church condones her people drinking blood?? Please, please, do not tell me that you are referring to the Eucharist! Christ did not command His followers to drink the blood flowing from His wounds on the cross. He commands us to eat and drink His very Presence: Body, Blood, Soul, & Divinity, which is mysteriously united to His sacrifice upon the cross … but this is no cannibalistic or vampirish blood-drinking rite.

Of course the Vatican doesn’t address the issue of vampires any more than … well you’ve already heard it. It’s because they are FICTIONAL.

That being said… even fictional characters need to abide by some rules. I would have been much more impressed with the movie had the characters been struggling with possessing “redemptive qualities” in spite of following the mirror and sunlight rules. (Oh, wait a minute… that’s the premise of a story that I’m currently working on.) 😉

I haven’t really been able to get into The Host. It is very different than the Twilight series. I’ve put it aside for now and will try again later.

FYI: New Moon begins shooting in March!!!
