My DH and I are moving 1.5 hours away from where we currently live. This is the first “real” move for both of us (my first move was when we got married and I moved in, but I had very little things and my parents did all the hard work. My husband’s first move was when he moved into this apartment and he only had a few boxes worth of things, no furniture).

We have to move out by the 31st and we can’t move in to our new apartment until the 4th, so we’ll be staying with friends for a few days. It’s going to be kind of hectic for a while, I think.

Not to mention we’re moving to a new town and have to go to a new church… it’s a lot for us to deal with all at once.

Anyhow, we’re both kind of nervous/stressed about this whole deal. Any special words of advice or tips for first-time moves?

Hey there!

Congratulations on your upcoming move. I’ve done it a lot and it can be really exciting if you keep an open mind and a sense of humor.

I don’t have any tips for dealing with a move emotionally or spiritually, as you might have hoped to receive, but from a practical point of view, a couple of things come to mind:

1)Throw a lot of stuff away or donate things you don’t need before you move. Any clutter that gets packed into boxes will end up haunting you when you have to spend days unpacking it in your clean new house.
  1. Seems obvious, but clearly label boxes with the rooms that they will go into. Be specific: Kitchen, Baby Girl’s Closet, Front Hallway, etc.
  2. Make sure you separate the things you’ll need right away at your new house from the things you could live without for a few weeks. You’ll probably want basic dishes, sheets, towels, some clothes, toiletries.
  3. Think through what you’ll need the very first night at your new house. If you have a moving company, will they have delivered your stuff yet? What will you sleep on? Do you need to pull out sleeping bags or air mattresses? You’ll probably need to get take-out for dinner that night and do a quick supermarket run for things like hand soap and toilet paper.
  4. It’ll get messy and hectic in your new house until you unpack and develop an organization system. In the meantime, figure out a place to put important papers to keep them from getting lost in the shuffle. Maybe you have a clear plastic box that you could keep on your kitchen counter. In goes leasing information, bills, important receipts, etc. Ideally you would act on and file these right away, but it’s been my experience that during a move they tend to languish on a coffee table or desk for a few weeks before being rediscovered and finally put away.
  5. When you get to your new church go up to introduce yourself to the priest right after the first mass. Tell him you just moved here. Then register with the parish office right away. One of the things that made my last move so much easier was the fact that the priests knew us and were very welcoming. It also makes it easier if you need to get proof that you’ve been attending mass to be a sponsor or to get a child baptized.
When I think of more I’ll post them. In the meantime, good luck!

Thanks nodito,

I did forget about things we’ll need the first night… like toilet paper. It would be an awkward thing to be without. 🙂
