Moving / Missing Mass

Hello. I am moving back to school tomorrow (Father’s only day off). Anyways, we were considering Mass out at my school but the summer schedule is different than during the school year and so we will not have a chance to go to Mass there (leaving around eight thirty or nine in the morning). Anyways, the church’s, that I know of, around the school are not having Mass tomorrow (extra Masses Saturday evening) because of a very large sporting event that will be bringing in much traffic. So, my family, which misses Mass occasionally, does not seem as if they will be heading there tomorrow. I am heading to Mass in the morning prior to leaving and have made it known so because I cannot risk not getting back home in time for the evening Mass. If my family does not make it back or chooses not to go, am I aiding in the sin? I have informed them that I am going in the morning as an offering that they (hopefully) will come with me… Their sense of religiosity is a little different from mine at times… It makes things difficult.

You’ve stated your position and let them know how you feel about missing Mass. You can’t control what the rest do/don’t do. Pray for them…perhaps invite them to go one last time. In the end though, they are responsible for whether or not they meet the obligation.

you offered to have them attend with you. If they do not go, they are responsible to God for not making an effort like yourself. don’t worry about it and continue with your attendance with mass. When I have made special effort to attend mass when it would have been easier to skip do to schedule conflicts, I have found extra blessings from doing so. Say a prayer for them.

I would offer one last time before you go–do they want to go with you? Tell them, “Remember, the Church teaches missing Mass is grave matter.” Or you could try a softer approach and tell them it would mean a lot to you since you are going back to school and won’t see them again for awhile. Whatever you think will have the biggest effect on your parents–you know them best. Then if they do not go, it is their own free will. I believe God will bless you for your decision to honor Him by going to Mass tomorrow in spite of your busy schedule!!
