Moving To Arizona

I will be relocating to Florence AZ next year
Southeast of Phoenix
But I might be just a close to Queen Creek
Coming from an area were Catholics are close to the Majority
it might be a large adjustment
Any tips on a faithfull Parish
I have attended the Chuch of the Holy Cross in Mesa when I visited my son but it’s a little far out

I have only been in that area a few times but I can see why you want to relocate there …Beautiful… You shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a Parish there…That part of the country was Catholic way back.
 
Corpus Christi parish in Phoenix? I know they have Perpetual Adoration which is a good sign, but know little else. Anyone familiar with this parish?
Would that be too far for you?
 
Good question. Whenever I’m travelling, I always look up masstimes.org to see what I can gather from available parishes b/c I do prefer more trad’l parishes. Even if the parish looks less-than-trad’l, often the web links (if the parish has a website) give a good indication of the type of pastor there (but not always).

You should be okay, or at least not too bad; our bishop here, Olmsted, is famously hardcore. I think there’s a parish, somewhere in Phoenix, where the priest is named Father Billy…something. I’ll have to ask someone his last name. He’s a genius, incredibly orthodox, and his homilies are gold. Doctrine, tradition, scripture, faith and morals, all solid as a rock, and so funny your head will explode. He actually preaches on the feast day, and is acquainted with proof texts and philosophy! He used to be stationed in Williams, near Flagstaff, so he occasionally visited us.

Curse you, Phoenix, for taking cool priests away from Coconino County! 😉

You are in luck. Our Lady of Guadalupe mission in Queen Creek was just named a parish a month ago, the Bishop asked the Legionaires of Christ to run the parish. The LofC have two priests and two seminarians there I believe and are hoping to start a Newman Center at the nearby ASU East.

It is Fr. Billy Kosco, and we had him first, he was the associate pastor at St. Anne’s before he was made pastor of the three parishes near Williams. He is currently the pastor of St. Henry’s in Buckeye, which is much to far of a drive for Gus. Yes, he is an awesome priest.

St. Anne’s (which is in Gilbert, Gus, which is not to far from you) has a new associate pastor. He was ordained in June, and he is on FIRE, extremely orthodox and he takes his evangelistic mission very seriously. His name is Fr. John Lankeit. The Diocese of Phoenix was in ashes a few years ago, but we are rising out of it under the leadership of our awesome Bishop.

I love it when people post stuff like this, 'cuz then I look for the sites that are not recommended and I always find great stuff! The other day I found a great address by Sr. Joan Chittister on masculine and feminine aspects of theology and worldview.
 
Our Lady of Guadalupe shouldn’t be too long of a drive. I know of some faithful Catholics who have done some things with that new parish, so I suspect it’s going to be fairly orthodox, but I haven’t actually attended Mass there. There is a parish in Florence, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but I don’t know anything about it. You’re right on the border between the Diocese of Phoenix and the Diocese of Tucson.

As for Corpus Christi, that is probably 50 miles from Florence. I’ve heard good things about it too, but there are solid parishes much closer than that.

If you want to go a bit farther there is St. Anne’s, and I might also add St. Mary’s over in Chandler (which is probably a bit far, but I thought I’d throw it in also).
 
Actually I just moved to Oracle, AZ which is just north of Tucson. Any good parishes around me?

That is in the Diocese of Tucson and I am not that familiar with Tucson, so I can’t be of any help.

It is a new Traditional Latin Mass community that has received an Indult, although I don’t know how big of a drive that is for you.
 
The Bishop is very good. He came from the Lincoln Diocese were it is as orthodox as it gets. I remember my local parish priest telling me that the first thing Bishop Olmstead did after being installed the Bishop of Phoenix, was clean house on dissenting priest. Gotta love it. 👍
 
We actually have 4 Bishops in Arizona, Bishop Olmsted in Phoenix, Bishop Pelotte of Gallup (although Gallup is in New Mexico, his Diocese includes parts of Arizona), Bishop Kicanas of Tucson, and Bishop Skurla of the Byzantine Eparchy of Van Nuys.

Actually the first thing that Bishop Olmsted did when he got here was lead a large group of prayerful protestors at Planned Parenthood Abortion Clinic on Christmas Eve. Then he proceeded to do many other things such as get rid of dissenting priests, clean up the Catechetical/Deacon formation program (Kino Institute), invite priests from orthodox orders to take over parishes, increase vocations, give a very generous Indult to the Tridentine community (our previous Bishop hated the TLM and absolutely refused the TLM Indult, therefore we had 4 SSPX chapels here), invite Mother Angelica’s Nuns to start the first cloistered monastery in the Diocese, provide solid and clear teaching, etc., etc.

Bishop Olmstead has it figured out and is doing all the right thing to clean up a diocese. However it takes time. Interesting thing here in Lincoln is that Bishop Bruskewitz brought in an order of cloistered nuns (The Pink Sisters), who pray all day in front of the blessed Sacrament. Their main focus is praying for vocations. Ironically we have one of the highest rate of young men entering the semianary in the nation. Bishop Bruskewitz always gives credit to the “Pink Sister,” for this. Bishop Olmstead is obviously trying to duplicate this in Phoenix. Sit back and watch your vocations will take off. Whenever a diocese has a good orthodox Bishop with a backbone, and then add a cloistered order of nuns who will pray constantly watch out…good things will happen. 👍

Is it really “ironic,” as in coincidental, unexpected, or poignantly incongruous?

I’d rather say that that “correspondingly” or “consequently” you have such high rates of vocations. One would like to think that prayer leads directly to great results.
 
Well if you’re really traditional, then stay away from all masses after noon. Life Teen was started in Phoenix and it seems like every parish has one. Im not sure tho, i’ve only visited there, not lived there. Catholics don’t seem to be rare there. Every parish I went to was like a mega church. But for the most part, the theology was very conservative.

LifeTeen is getting more traditional in the Phoenix area. As for the megachurch bit, ugh, it’s pervasive – they run nearly every parish here as if it were a megachurch and I’m not a megachurch person.
 
Does anyone know anything about the Bishop of Tucson?

All I know is that the Bishop is new because of the large amount of sex scandels in the area about 5 years ago. The other bishop to my knowlege is now just the back up.
