Moving to Missouri!

I will be moving my little family to a small town off of route 36 right smack dab in the middle of North Central Missouri this summer. I am taking a new position.

The town is located in the Jeff City Diocese. I will be a few hours from St Louis and Kansas City, and a few more to Branson and the Ozarks.

Any one have experience living there want to share what you know?

I am looking for “Catholic” things to do. Maybe monasteries…orders, shrines, good people, good parishes, maybe even secular stuff…gatherings, festivals…any and all of the above.

You have to visit Conception, MO and the Abby there. Just simply beautiful. It would make a nice family trip when the weather warms up.

You could visit Assumption Abbey, in Ava, Mo.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been there, but if you visit the recreational area around Bagnell Dam and the Lake of the Ozarks, be sure to go to Mass at Our Lady of the Lakes church. It tends to have a smaller congregation in the winter, and a large congregation in the summer during tourist season.

The Missouri conservation dept. will send your kids a free Xplor magazine if you sign up for it. It’s good for elementary age kids.

Also, it’s a lot closer to AR than where you will be, but, the George Washington Carver museum in Diamond, MO is great. If the Catholic Church canonized non-Catholics as saints, he should definitely be at the top of the list. He was an amazing person/scientist.

I don’t know much about north-central Missouri, but I go to St. Louis from time to time. And I would strongly advise you to make a visit to the City Museum in St. Louis. It is a unique and very fun experience for the whole family. You won’t regret it. I give it my highest recommendation.

Other fun things in St. Louis include the Magic House (for younger kids), the science center, the zoo, the Gateway Arch, and of course the St. Louis Cardinals (if you are a baseball fan). As far as Catholic attractions, the Cathedral in St. Louis is beautiful, and they also have at least one church that is dedicated to the traditional Latin Mass.

Our whole family also really loves Silver Dollar City in Branson. Get a 2 or 3 day pass (or it may be cheaper to get a season pass if you are going for more than 2 days) in order to have time to experience the whole park. They usually do “Bluegrass and Barbecue” in May, which can be a great time to go.

I am expecting it to be hot, but right now I am in Florida, so I am not worried about hot, just humidity and all the historical patterns suggest a lot less humidity when it counts up there.
