Mozart, Bach, Beethoven,etc........Lucky or Blessed?

is their talent God intended,

or just the luck of the draw?

Blessed in incredible ways. However, they didn’t let those blessings just sit there. They didn’t keep their talents “under a bushel”. They worked hard and developed them. The culture of the day fostered them as well.

We all have talents. As the old saying goes, “Blessings are a gift FROM God–what we do with those blessings is our gift TO God”.
 
Not only were they gifted with exceptional talent, most great musicians come from families of talented musicians who would be better able to recognize and cultivate their talents early on. I suppose the nurturing environment is a “lucky” aspect, but I always count it as “blessed.”
 
I believe their special talent is a wonderful gift from the Lord. And many of us are still getting pleasure and inspiration from their awesome gift. So, actually, it is God’s gift to all of us.

Same with artists, poets, inventors, etc.

It is from God- but perhaps not a blessing. I would see artistic ability as, in most cases, more like a personal sacrifice. The life of a musician (especially a composer) is generally not a pleasant one- perpetually being misunderstood, insecure with respect to livlihood, etc.Some might even say suffering is a necessary ingredient in being able to produce worthwhile art. The rate of suicide among composers is much higher than the general population.

‘Talent’ is no blessing- not to the person who has it. Mediocrity- that’s what’s best for a happy life- it’s a greater blessing.

I disagree. We all have knowledge, skills, and abilities to varying degrees; but a talent is a knowledge, skill, or ability of unusually high quality. There is a lady who is in charge of the music in our parish, and I could go into my garage and nail a bunch of junk together, and she could pick it up and play it. Now that’s talent, and few it.

I disagree 100%—we do all indeed have talents—they may not be musical, they may not be artistic, they may not be athletic…who knows what they are? But they are there. And it is incumbent upon us to discover them and develop them to the best of our ability. Yes, your choir director has talent–so do you. You just have to find the talent and do your best. That you can nail things in your garage is a talent—I’d hammer my thumb. I’m a professional musician—I can perform and understand the masters—I know what my talents are and what it has taken to develop them–what I have to do to maintain them. But I see more naturally gifted people do much less and lesser talented do more.

I still disagree. I might not hammer my thumb, but that’s not the measure of a talented carpenter any more than playing a CD player is the measurement of a talented musician. There are carpenters out there I could never hold a candle to. They have talent. I have only an ability, and that’s the way it is.

Haha, thanks! I got that from someone else on here I saw it then was like, “I NEED THAT!” Haha.​

Oh yes… this person actually made this song! He’s an amazing person I am inspired by his coordination, speed, and everything else. He’s truly gifted!

Part of it is natural ability; part is how hard you work it.

Ah, but you still have a talent…it’s just not as developed as someone else’s. People have varying degrees of the same talent. It doesn’t mean they don’t have talent of one type or another.

I believe their talents are blessings from God. The time periods they were born in, families, influences, mentorship, and other support which helped foster their talents so that they could realize their fullest potentials could be considered good fortune/luck. In a way, though, it could also be a blessing. The three you mentioned were freak talents and they were fortunate enough to have been born during a time and surrounded by people which recognized their abilities and provided either emotional or financial support.

Just look at Adolf Hitler. He was a genius at speech-making. Some even say that when you watch films of his speeches, you don’t even have to know German to see his dynamism.
