I just found out that our Youth Group is going to be “leading” the Stations of the Cross one Friday this Lent.

Can someone point me to an mp3 of the tune for Stabat Mater, so that I can teach the kids this song, beforehand?

I am doing a search, but I’m coming up empty - there are all kinds of wonderful new versions of it out there, and all sorts of fancy-pants classical music versions with all kinds of descants and other frippery-froo - it’s the normal one that everyone knows, is the one that I’m looking for, though.

Thanks!! 🙂

Here’s a page that describes stations. If you scroll down, there’s a sample of Stabat Mater.

All the older folks will recognize it. One verse to be sung at the end of each station as the priest and altar boys are moving to the next station. It’s very sad and very beautiful. Go to the first Stations of the Cross this Friday and you’ll see. I’m 53, and I’ve never gone to Stations where this was not sung.

Good luck!

Here’s a You tube video of the Pope saying th stations last year. The Stabat Mater is sung in this at about 35 seconds into the video:

It’s not hard.

These are the same English lyrics we sang forty years ago. And generally speaking we only sang the first verse since that was sufficient time to process to the next station.

The one that we use has 15 verses - one to start and then one after each of the Stations.

This one is not the same tune, though. It’s very similar - it starts off the same, but the ending is different.

PS: Don’t worry - I’m not going to play the recording in Church.

I am going to use the recording to teach the children how to sing the tune, and then they will sing it without accompaniment, in the Church. 👍

Sigh. You’re going to have children singing chant. I need to get off my butt and see if I can get the same happening at my parish.

My holy hour of Adoration is on fridays during the time that the children from the school come into the church to do stations. there is nothing that’ll bring tears to your eyes quicker than children chanting the stabat mater. It’s something I recall vividly from catholic school during lent.
