I recently finished reading Catholicism and Fundamentalism and was blown away by some of the anti-catholic literature/groups that are out there. I guess I assumed some of the ministries mentioned in the book were now history, but I was wrong. I just went to a local restaurant for lunch and found two Jack Chick tracts in the men’s room. I snatched them to read them (and to dispose of them).

Does anyone else run into the ministries mentioned in the book?

Yes, I run into Jack Chick tracts and other stuff in the Catholic hospital where I work. I have found them outside the ER on carts, in front of our chapel, in the waiting rooms. Ugly stuff. One group is dumb enough to stamp the name of the church from which they are distributed on them. When I find them, I take them to Pastoral Care, who then deals with the matter.

It is not a pretty sight to family members of seriously ill patients in the ER or in surgery to come across a tract declaring a person is going to hell if they are Catholic, or whatever (it is not limited to Catholics, but the majority of the stuff is) and they die.

And once in a while they will end up on the windshields of the cars in the church parking lot.

This stuff is bred out pure hatred for the Catholic Church. There is no excuse for such hatred.

You can find more folks like that on the net. These folks aren’t just anti-Catholic, they’re downright loonies. They think listening to anything other than “church music” and playing anything that deviates from the standard of games such as Bible Scrabble will lead you to worship satan.

Personally I don’t think I even have to show I’m Catholic to antagonize these guys. I could just play Yu-Gi-Oh! in front of them while listening to j-rock. XD

I just read some of Mr. Chicks books and this fella is a full loon. Just another Catholic hater spouting twisted words against our faith to fill the void in his life. These type of people have no faith and feel the need to try to bring the faithful down, but not me! i will pray for him and others like him.

peace be with you

I didn’t become a Christian until my mid-forties, and those awful Chick tracts were a big reason.

I wish there was a way to compare how many people they’ve “saved” vs. how many people they’ve driven away from Jesus.

Let’s pray for Mr. Chick and those who distribute his nonsense.

OTOH, I think it might be good for us to hear more homilies about hell, and what gets us there…

God bless us all,

Ruthie

I first encountered the Chick tracts as a child, they were often handed out on the street or to be found in phone booths, etc, in my inner city neighbourhood. Since they’re comic book style, they’re pretty appealing to kids generally. Sounds funny to say maybe, but in spite of all the crime and other scary events I witnessed as a kid in the South Bronx, those Chick tracts were one of THE most frightening aspects of my childhood. They will live on in my nightmares forever…

Not surprising considering that Chick Tracts make use of the most horrid comic book artwork I’ve seen in my life.

No kidding!! I almost have to laugh when I read Jack Chick referred to (on his website) as having “award-winning artistic talent”.

I can’t say if I read that on his site but if he actually did, tell him I’ve seen better artwork from guys who draw ecchi fan-service manga.

I first came across his stuff back in about 1988. The comic book “Alberto” was the first I got of it. That was before I learned anything real about the Catholic church. So, it took me awhile to see what raw sewage his stuff is. He doesn’t care for the truth.
And would you believe that someone mailed me one? I think it was a mass mailing because it used only my first and middle initial. Which is how it is in the phone book.

But don’t limit yourself to just his stuff. Only a miracle could change him now.

On a similar line. Here in Topeka we have Fred Phelps and his westboro baptist church. Any one ever heard about him? He’s the local magot who wants to picket everything and everyone. With so many military funerals going on the last few years, ole Freddie was kept busy. He and his group would picket these basically saying that each American killed in the war was because of America’s support of the gay lifestyle.

As far as I know, he still pickets here in Topeka. If you want a tone of what he and his group is about go to www.godhatesamerica.com.

Take these guys as a laugh. Like many arrogant people, they think that only they are right. And the scary part is that people are believing his garbage. I’ve even seen little kids out helping hold signs. What is being taught these children is hate. Hate toward someone who isn’t in your own group Hate to those who are different. I’ve heard it said that you can kill a person with your words. Words of hate that is. You can kill that person’s reputation and all things like that. He’s pathetic.

Oh yeah, Chick and Rev. Phelps have a heavy ton in common. The only difference is the way they direct extra hatred towards certain groups. For Chick and his ilk, it’s us Roman Catholics. For the Westboro cult, it’s homosexuals.

Frankly I think both of them should get together. That way it’d be easier for people to smack 'em down at once.

I remember Chick’s tracts from my childhood. I grew up Baptist and we had a lot of Chick tracts on the rapture. I was always skeptical about the fundamentalist teaching on the rapture. Felt like Chick was overdoing it with his literature.

When I converted to the Catholic Church my family was scandalized about my decision. Instead of asking me about my beliefs some turned to tract literature to refute my Catholic faith. Of course Chick’s absurd representation of Catholic theology found it’s way into our conversation.

I have some advice for the would be Protestant evangelists who want to discuss/debate the Catholic Church’s doctrine with informed Catholics…FORGET THE CHICK TRACTS! The bogus strawman that Chick presents isn’t the One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church. It’s an insult to any Catholic and a real non-starter.

I mean honestly…if I hear one more time about pagan worship in the Catholic Church my head is going to explode.

If you want to discuss the Church’s teachings let’s examine an offical source of said teaching like the Catecism. Leave the Chick tracts for the Jehova’s Witness!

Even the Jehovah’s witnesses should not be subject to this type of hate, nobody should. Even if we don’t agree with someone’s beliefs, everyone has a fundamental right to their religious beliefs and should be respected, not harrassed. The people distributing these tracts have yet to learn that it is love, not hate and lies, that attract people to Jesus Christ. They are very sad examples of Christian behavior.

It started with ML and Calvin. their whole theology is based on that. every new church is built on bashing the CC. that is how they are formed. and it is not going to change. the other day a patient gave a little booklet. it was all bout bashing the teachings of the CC. guess where was from. baptist church.

I dunno, the WBC pretty anti-Catholic as well; they have a counter with the number of days JPII has been “in hell”. They make some sort of bizarre Priest-pedophile-homosexual connection, and we Catholics will all be joining JPII in hell

Very bizarre.

In the big picture, though, these false prophets are easy to spot. It’s the more subtle ones that Satan has more success with.

There are many ignorant, jealous, suspicious, misleading, and/or even malicious people out there. Do the world a favor and throw their writings away when you find them. Know your faith, so you can refute things like this- but try not to dwell on these things. With so many good, holy writings out there to think about, and with our lives being as short as they are, there is no time to waste reading trash like this.

I think it would be good to remember Saint Paul’s words when faced with this sort of situation.
whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Yeah but… I don’t know… the way that they’ve connected our religion with homosexuality seems to prove what they’re really sensitive about. I could be wrong of course (doesn’t matter really since the group’s a bunch of losers anyways XD), but if the whole priest-sex-abuse scandal never happened would you think they’d still target us as much? I just noticed that they seem to have an obsession to connect everything to homosexuality the same way Jack Chick tries to blame Catholicism for everything.

Over the last several decades that this incognito Chick guy’s been publishing his lies, hasn’t even one journalist done an investigation to see who this guy is, whether he’s just someone with some very grumpy hangups, a simply misinformed but well meaning man, or something more sinister such as KKK? And that’s the thing; these people who hand out these tracts surely don’t know who he is or his intentions. With all the Christians (?) out there who put their faith in this man & his strange gospel, it looks like people would have wanted to know about the man who hides behind the shadows and what his motives are behind the material. Besides his strange and vicious tracts, his elusiveness is a big red flag.

I think some people have actually met him though, including one of CA’s own apologists. Look around the forums, I think you might find it. 🤷

Oh, I didn’t know that… that’s interesting! Thank you :).
