Over the last several decades that this incognito Chick guy’s been publishing his lies, hasn’t even one journalist done an investigation to see who this guy is, whether he’s just someone with some very grumpy hangups, a simply misinformed but well meaning man, or something more sinister such as KKK? And that’s the thing; these people who hand out these tracts surely don’t know who he is or his intentions. With all the Christians (?) out there who put their faith in this man & his strange gospel, it looks like people would have wanted to know about the man who hides behind the shadows and what his motives are behind the material. Besides his strange and vicious tracts, his elusiveness is a big red flag.
Here’s something that was done about him here at CA.

Chick publications is one of the most bigoted publishing companies out there if you ask me. Their tracts that are geared towards Catholics are published out of pure hatred for the Catholic Church and Catholics. As another poster said, there is no excuse for such hatred. It disgusts me that such hatred exists. I wonder if there are any groups out there that are worse?

That said, I know of a few websites that are geared entirely towards evangelizing Catholics. I find this to be disgusting as well because again, it is published out of pure hatred for the Catholic Church and Catholics. Some of these groups claim that they love Catholics but I honestly don’t buy that.

I’ve got a copy of “The Nightmare World of Jack Chick” on order, and I can’t wait to read it.

When I lived in Chicago many years ago I used to find his nonsense on buses & El (subway) cars. On one level I had to laugh at them (to be honest, at first I thought they were satirical underground publications), but on another level they represent the outpouring of a very, very, very disturbed individual. (Calling the Eucharist a “death cookie”–that’s just beyond absurd.)

It seems to me that only a really weak mind would be taken in by that stuff…but there are a lot of weak minds out there.

Well, I read “The Nightmare World of Jack Chick” today; a pretty quick read–and it was very interesting. I was hoping to learn a little more about the man himself–why he hates Catholics so much, etc.–but it was plenty interesting to read about some of his paranoid and completely unfounded conspiracy theories.

Did you know that Catholics created Communism? Islam? Latter-Day Saints? Paid prostitutes to get gold from the California '49ers (the gold miners, not the football team)? That Catholics have a huge database of every single Protestant? Yeesh. Probably thinks the Pope created the AIDS virus. (Hey, didn’t AIDS appear about the same time as John Paul II? Hmmm…)

He seems to think Jesuits are responsible for every evil in the world, even for things that took place before the Jesuits were founded. Hey, if they can travel through time, maybe they should be running the world! (Ironically, I interrupted my reading of a book about St. Ignatius of Loyola, Mary Purcell’s “The First Jesuit”, to read about Chick.)

In terms of Chick’s motivation, the author, CA’s own Jimmy Akin, hints that maybe Chick is in it for the money–which wouldn’t surprise me one bit–but the guy sure has associated with some weird people, including one Alberto Rivera, a liar and thief (claimed to be a Catholic bishop; was actually on the run several times for being a paper-hanger).

It would be really sad if anybody took this stuff seriously, but I’ll bet many people take Chick as some kind of modern prophet. I think Tolstoy said that the printing press was responsible for more ignorance than any other invention in history–and people like Jack Chick sure make that seem true.

I buy it. I actually have a lot of trouble understanding how worrying that someone may go to hell can constitute hate.
I used to be Pentecostal, not that long ago, and I thought that whatever contained Scripture was a message straight from God to the heart of the reader, doing unseen wonders even if unconsciously. It actually never occurred to me that anyone might see WOTM, Chick publications, or Four Spiritual Laws materials e.g. as anything but love. It took a lot of time to understand that some people, even other Christians, really did think we didn’t like them. We interpreted any criticism as persecution for the sake of the Gospel. Remember that the people who run up on the street shouting urgings to get saved, and such activities, are battered at all times except in church by all kinds of people who never say what their problem with the evangelists really is. It thickens the skin and perhaps the head too.
A good approach is to do just what they do, right back: establish the common ground, then slowly seek out the weak points in their beliefs (the ones that differ from your own, of course). Address these until they ask what you believe. Then, and I can’t overstate the importance of this to the whole conversation, answer the question. Start backing it up right away. Work on their weak areas, without anger or disdain, as they would do to you. Then as they are working out a response, either get comfortable so you feel no pressure as you reply in turn, or if hurried, invite them to your own turf to continue the debate.
This works infinitely, literally infinitely, better than assuming the worst motives and getting angry and inarticulate and vague. Actually, when I was facing opposition in those days, if any of a number of people had just calmed down and explained their issue, I would have gotten it immediately. But saying vague things like, “Well, I don’t believe in hate (neither did I)” or “Hypocrite! ()” or “What does it mean? What is the truth? (A lot of things are true; how about an example?)” does a lot more harm than good. So does attributing the worst possible motives to people instead of taking them at their word as to their motivation. Had someone just said, “I take issue with this material because it’s not the only interpretation of this passage there is. Were you aware of that?” Anyone I hung out with would have listened and spent the day in fascination if anything.

I hate to disappoint you, but Chick and Phelps aren’t interested in truth. They have their own brand of truth, and they don’t want to hear anyone else’s. And their stuff is NOT based on love. If it were to be based on love, why do they spread such lies? It’s outright hateful, and those who support them should be ashamed of themselves.

I recently finished reading Catholicism and Fundamentalism and was blown away by some of the anti-catholic literature/groups that are out there. I guess I assumed some of the ministries mentioned in the book were now history, but I was wrong. I just went to a local restaurant for lunch and found two Jack Chick tracts in the men’s room. I snatched them to read them (and to dispose of them).

Does anyone else run into the ministries mentioned in the book?
Yeah, Jack Chick is a kook – and a kook whose stuff I’ve been running into for decades.

Here’s a pretty good site on modern anti-Catholicism:

www2.trincoll.edu/~dcruzuri/anti-catholic/anti-catholic.html

You’ll see that a bunch of those groups (and other like them) are quite active.

Just last night, I found a Chick track at the gas station. It’s message was simply sharing the life of Jesus (no Catholic bashing in this one). The only incorrect statements made were the conclucions at the end which taught one how to be saved. I had a moral dilemma, let it stay there or take it away?
On the one hand, this track might have helped a person to come to Christ (not likely, but possibly). On the other hand, it could lead a person down a road of serious error or possibly scare them away from Christ with the strange artwork. I don’t like Jack Chick so I removed the tract (that was about as intricate as my decision making process got).

You did the right thing, I think. If someone had picked it up and thought it relatively harmless, he might have assumed the same about all of Chick’s tracts, and the next time he saw one…

I’m totally against Chick’s tracts but it got me to thinking–would there be any way that Catholic tracts with Catholic teaching in comic book format similar to his could be developed?

Why not comic book Catholic tracts?

lol, that guy is (Edited) insane.

I cannot fathom how anyone takes him seriously.

Probably not a bad idea, really. Might help de-mystify Catholicism for a lot of people.

You might want to get a better artist to do them though. XD

I’m sure there are many Catholic cartoonists who are also good artists.

What would the world be like if there were alot of Catholic tracts that were ubiquitously distributed along with numerous Catholic bibles in motels instead of Gideon KJV bibles and how about The Catholic Catechism, too?

Protestants lead people astray–maybe the Catholic Church with tracts, Catholic bibles, and Catechisms could lead people in the right direction!

It couldn’t hurt. If the Marriott hotel chain can put a copy of the Book of Mormon next to the Gideon Bible, why couldn’t Catholics do something similar in Catholic-owned properties?

I like the idea of pro-Catholic tracts. How would one get started? Maybe place some holy cards around…

Guys you’re absolutely right!

Praise Be To God for inspiring something Catholic and better! I use them all the time.

There are about 25 or so different titles and they are all concise and well written as well as containing good art and they are very reasonably priced.

You’ll find them here. grottopress.org/assets/images/autogen/Catholic_Tracts_NRp2.gif

How cool! I’m going to order some and leave 'em scattered around.

I find the rubbish that Mr. Chick shovels out to be reprehensible to the highest degree, but that has already been established! We seriously need to pray for not only Mr. Chick, but, more importantly, those uneducated souls who will come across this rubbish and think it the truth.

Jack Chick has got to be one of the most hateful and bigoted persons out there. He hates Catholicism, Wicca (Witchcraft), Halloween (also known as All Hallows Eve to you Catholics :p), the theory of evolution, and pretty much anything else that disagrees with him. He teaches King James Bible Only theology which is one of the most aberrant forms of theology out there. He produces what is essentially hate literature and makes sure that it gets spread around so that he can convert more people to his cult of hatred, ignorance, and bigotry and he spreads pseudoscience around. As you can tell, I do not have a high opinion of Jack Chick. :p;)
