Washington, DC – MSNBC is coming under fire from pro-life Catholics upset about the way two of its show hosts treated Bishop Thomas Tobin. The Rhode Island bishop received national attention the last few days as pro-abortion Congressman Patrick Kennedy made public a private letter admonishing him on abortion.

Saw the “interview” with Chris Matthews. First of all, Matthews ought to have his nose punched for the disrespect he showed. That said, the not have gone along with that quote from John Kennedy’s speech to the Baptist Inquisition, which was pure sophistry, and yes, I know he got the idea from John Courtney Murray. Kennedy was sayjng that morality has nothing to do with making law, and that was Matthews argument, too.

As difficult as watching that video was, I do think Matthews brings up a valid question. And while I don’t think that Bishop needs to give a number of years, we as prolifers need to address the issue of legal punishment. I also find that many pro-lifers only think that women who have abortions should be punished, and are rightly, criticized for it. This implies that you think women are children and undermines the claim that abortion is murder. This is something pro-lifers need to wrestle with?

I am apt to agree with that, but… turn the other cheek, as Christ said. Let them be disrespectful and try to ridicule us. It only makes them look bad.

**Chris Matthews, the same guy who gets a “chill up his leg” when he hears Obama speak? The guy who asked the idiotic question, “Is it illegal (for a US Army Major) to call Al-Qaeda?”

His ignorance of the Truth & his callous disrespect for others is blatantly evident every time he opens his mouth!**

Legal punishments are determined by law writers (politicians) and imposed by judges.

The “Natural Law” is written by God in every man & woman’s heart and God will have the Final Judgment & determine what punishment is earned by each sinner.

Don’t get distracted by these red herring arguments. Abortion is always wrong, always a grave evil, and the punishment is irrelevant, it is the crime that must be stopped!

The wall to wall coverage of Kennedy’s funeral was the media’s attempt to define him as the standard of Catholicism in American politics. Cardinal McCarrick’s role only further fueled that illusion, and he cannot claim that was unintentional. Everyone knew that would be the end result.

And here we are with the media having defined American Catholicism attacking that which they perceive to be in error, under their own falsely assumed authority. Catholics must stop turning the other cheek. We have been turning for 50 years in this country now, and the time to fight back is now. Those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.

We will call out bigotry wherever we find it using the loudest and largest forums available. We will break the financial backs of businesses who cooperate with the persecution. We will no longer worry about keeping the peace and building bridges. Those bridges have damaged the House of God, and it is time for us to renew the face of the earth. Our church may lose some of it’s family, but those who remain will be all the more faithful.

I pray for our elected leaders daily.

The ranting, raving and interuptions on Matthews behalf is how he normally conducts interviews with everyone who appears on his show.

I think he put Bishop Thomas Tobin on the spot by asking tough questions and demanding answers; but then again if you look at his track record, he has a habit of doing that with almost every guest on his show.

Interestingly, Matthews, a Catholic referring to the Bishop as “Your Excellency" was obviously a faux pax; I’d think he’d know how to properly address the Bishop.

Religious figures depending on how you view them, are in the public light as a rule and as such are subject to criticisim and praise. I don’t think he was too concerned about appearing on the Chris Matthews Show, he can take care of himself as it was obvious if you saw the program.

As far as “having his nose punched”, i’m assuming you mean figuratively, that accomplishes nothing. If your really offended by what you saw, don’t waste your time writing a letter, rather the best weapon is to not watch the show at all.

On a purely personal level isn’t the making public of a private letter a low disreputable act? One appreciates that Kennedy’s agenda is to damage a Church he despises and in that context an opportunity to embarrass the Church was too good to miss but would you ever write to him? I wouldn’t

I said that Matthews deserved to have his nose punched, and I imagine that if his grandfather were alive, he would do the job. For him–a Catholic-- to attack the bishop’s position as he did was far worse than Joe Miller’s outburst against Mr. Obama. A breach of decorum. Beyond that Matthews as obviously absorbed the petty anti-clericalism of his class, his pretense that he is the bishop’s equal, even on matters dealing with the relation of morality and law. I would never treat McCarrick with this sort of disrespect, even though I have a low of him and certainly of his political views. And I would not dream of attacking Matthews physically, because he is one of those guys who has never thrown a punch in his life. It would be illegal and I would probably kills him. Even though I am more than ten years older than he, he is obviously in terrible shape.

Personally I would have more respect for the a la carte churchbashers if they would simply put their money where their mouths are, make the obvious intellectually and emotionally satisfying action and join whatever protestant sect is closest to their view.

Well, MSNBC has a grand total of about ten or eleven viewers, so I’m not too worried about it
