Mt 20:22-23 - Why does the KJV and NKJV contain things not in the origicanl Greek?

In looking around at where “Baptism” is used in the Gospels I ran across these verses.
But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

However the reference to Baptism is not seen in the Greek, nor is it contained in the RSV or the NAB.

What is the background on this being added to here in the KJV (and the NKJV as well)?

I can sort of see it in the original KJV, but it seems odd that this is carried over into the New KJV…

Both the KJV and the New KJV are based on late Alexandrian text-type sources. They are not based on the Textus Receptus which most bibles are based on. Most early sources don’t contain this verse.

The New KJV has the foot note that the “NU-Text omits and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with.”

So the translators acknowledged that the analysis of the critical text did not include the verse as authentic, but included it anyway.

Ch.7 of Metzger’s book, ‘The Text of the New Testament its Transmission, Corruption and Restoration’ discusses ‘The Causes of Error in the Transmission of the Text of the New Testament,’ He talks about a categories of changes to the original texts > intentional changes.

“Some harmonistic alterations originated unintentionally; others were made quite deliberately. Since monks usually knew by heart extensive portions of the scriptures the temptation to harmonize discordant parallels or quotations would be strong in proportion to the degree of the copyist’s familiarity with other parts of the Bible”
