At the end of this article is a veiled warning that this college may be removed from the Newman Guide if they continue such contrary practices.

My son is a student at Mount St. Mary’s. We were happy that he chose to go there when he did, but I’m not sure if I would want him to apply there now. It is sad to see it become another Catholic in name only university. I hope that the Newman Society will send a wake up call to what was once a solid Catholic institution.

Just an observation. Whenever a once orthodox Catholic institution turns south, liberalism is usually the root cause. Once infected, orthodoxy diminishes. And left unchallenged, the truth will erode to such an extent that a once decent institution can no longer be considered Catholic. Now I’m not saying that this is the case for Mt. St. Mary’s…yet. But we’ve seen it before with other Catholic universities.

Liberalism is a cancer. It subverts truth. Liberalism and Catholicism cannot co-exist. They’re incompatible. Unfortunately though, it is deeply rooted inside the Church today. And that my friends is cause for great concern!

I totally agree. It’s the reason I’ve become leery about taking online courses through any school not in the Newman Guide. And I’ve taken a lot of them!

It is sad, Mike. Apparently the president of the school is adamant about having Shriver speak. What message does this send?

Is this Newman list really an important thing?

I can’t think that schools are falling over themselves to get on it or remain on it.

I’d certainly rather my kids go to Holy Cross or Notre Dame than Christendom College!

The Newman list is mainly important to orthodox Catholics. Those who put their faith first, ahead of secular values, secular status, etc.
Schools on the list teach Ex Corde Ecclesia.

Its very important if you are an orthodox faithful Catholic and you want your child to receive a solid Catholic education. Mark Shriver spoke at Holy Cross and Obama at Notre Dame, both should be avoided

Very true. I stopped taking courses online through Boston College due to their “progressive” slant, which I noted in the classes as well. I’ve taken several classes through Notre Dame’s STEP program as well, and it’s been a mixed bag, orthodoxy wise. Ditto with the University of Dayton. I may forego theology coursework for the forseeable future, anyway. I’ve taken a number of grad courses with Holy Apostles (on the Newman Guide list), and want to focus more on my poetry. I also found a Great Books certificate sequence offered through a community college–a real treasure!

Hillsdale College has FREE courses open to all and one on the Great Books. It is really good too!

Yes, I may look at them as well. Free is good, yes? I’ll be paying off my graduate degrees forever, but I love formal learning! Even in writing poetry, I love the research process almost as much as the composition, revision and editing. (I take poetry courses online, too, even though I already have an MFA. Always learning!)

I’m going to look at them too, down the road. I’ve been waiting for online the program at Monterey Peninsula College to start. I get in the in state tuition rate.
