Much Too Serious!

Much Too Serious!

As Catholics, Protestants and others here discussing our differences, do you think that at times, we are much too serious with one another? I know that I’m guilty of being too serious at times here, at CAF….

Your thoughts?

Of course not. The cost is too high not to be taken seriously. What else is more important than sinners being rescued from their condemned condition on the path for eternal wrath? Just because the CC states that Muslims may be saved, does not mean that Muslims can be saved apart from faith in Christ. These are issues of eternal consquences.

If each of us forgets to pray before posting, we are not serious. 😃

In all seriousness, we are too serious.

Sure souls are at stake, but we cannot win over souls by being TOO serious. Of course we have to be serious about defending the Truth and trying to bring people to Christ, but if we get too serious…we are then losing hope. Those with hope do not need to be drenched in seriousness because they have…well…Hope!

Underdog…also…by your post…it seems like you are saying that we need to do something in order to help people to be saved. Are you implying that some kind of good works are in order to bring Christ to people? Certainly you do not think that sitting by being content that you are saved is good enough. So I guess since you are trying to do good works you are in turn making salvation possible for others.

These are the wisest of words! All should take note and take heed of this advice!
 
I think some levity in a very serious thread is good. It lessens the tension and may disperse some of the hostility. However, if the subject of the thread pertains to how we spend eternity,no we are not being too serious.

BTW, Jimmy, though some see your threads as contentious, I see them as thought provoking and evangelical. Thanks:thumbsup:

Now that’s a reversal comming from a Latin Rite Catholic in full communion with Rome making a comment to Underdog who is labled as a Calvinist. Go figure in light of the solas…

In defence of the more serious types around here, it actually is pretty serious stuff we’re dealing with.

Offhand I don’t recall Jesus or the Apostles cracking any jokes or pulling any banana-peel gags in the NT, although He did clearly have a joy and love of life, you can’t love children as He did and not.

But for mine these things are different entirely from ‘lightening up’, if by that you mean feeling a need to make funny. Sometimes going for the cheap or easy laugh really detracts from the message as much as being overly serious would.

Seriously, I don’t think its a matter of being too serious. I think it is a matter of not being charitable enough, at times. And that goes for all of us, me included.

Funny stuff, Underdog, but of course I’m sure you’d agree it would apply to anyone who belongs to any religion (not just Catholicism) only because they were raised in it.

We should all take time, at some point in our lives, to take a closer look at our religious beliefs and make sure we’re not just holding onto them because our great-great-grandparents did.

I hope you’ll respect the fact that a lot of us here at CA have done just that. 👍

Thanks for the post. But we all can agree that this forum site would not be as fun without those non-Catholic Christians! I find those Protestant forum sites to be quite boring at times.

Hey, I used to be a moderator at an atheist forum which actually fell apart shortly after I reconverted to Catholicism! That was pretty exciting (and made me think I’d made the right decision - nyuk nyuk!).
 
Seriously, I think we’re being too serious at times. So I think we need to stop being so serious and seriously consider cracking soem jokes. Seriously.
