Seriously, I don’t think its a matter of being too serious. I think it is a matter of not being charitable enough, at times. And that goes for all of us, me included.

Jon
Well said.

I try to be serious, but on more than one occasion, I hold back.

Me too!

Catechism of the Catholic Church
2862 The fifth petition begs God’s mercy for our offences, mercy which can penetrate our hearts only if we have learned to forgive our enemies, with the example and help of Christ.

It’s not the seriousness that bugs me: it’s the unwillingness of many on both sides to listen to each other! Also what annoys me is when catholics gang up and talk about other users on a thread, which happens a lot here frankly.

Please do not give up on this forum because of it.

All of us could be more charitable. All of us should remember that just because a person does not accept our faith or our reasons for accepting it, it does not make them less human or worthy of attack.

As to the point about ganging up, part of that is just numbers, It can seem like we gang up when it is more because there are more of us.

The talking about other users is another matter. There are some of us that have a sort of rapport with each other that gives us freedom. It can seem like we are being unusually harsh or rude. We are not. SIA and I can be that way. I know that he does not attack ME and he knows that I am not attacking HIM. Steadfast, JonNC and others are the same way. However, sometimes, we are not charitable to each other or we forget that what we type may not be what is read.

We should all do better

It is hard to “read” a tone of voice, or facial expression on an internet forum. When one is here for a while, however, one gets to know who the charitable posters are, even when they may have had a bad day and come off harsh. In this case, familiarity breeds affection, and one overlooks the rare harsh post.

Stay a while, Grampben. You’ve learn who the good guys are, Catholic, Orthodox and non-catholic.
Jon

I’ll say some of the threads look like they are meant to incite and that normally happens. However I think most of the threads on here help me learn more about my faith and fellow Catholics!

HELLO AGAIN! I think sometimes we are too serious on here, but most of all, I think that some are just downright mean and rude to each other. Yep that goes for both sides Protestants and Catholics. As far as having to be serious all the time, nope I don’t think we do…do I think God had a sense of humor…YEP sure do, he made us didn’t he!!!😃

Hello **ralphinal **and JohnNC, you know I like you guys….but, I also like my Irish brother, **grampben **and he never said that he was leaving, unless there is something I don’t know about…

In his post here, he was merely describing feelings that I have had and I’m sure, both of you have had…. All three of you have been around for a while now…You guys aren’t new members.

So, you know that It ain’t always smiles and sunshine here fella’s, but hold off on the pit-party….I don’t think it’s justified in this pericular case, or on this thread.

The purpose of this thread was to get people here to lighten-up a little bit… 🙂

As far as any Catholics “ganging- up” on people……I’m Catholic and I’ve been a victim of “Catholic on Catholic violence”…a time or two… That’s ok though, because I probably brought it upon myself. :o

Fortunately though, most of the time, our disagreements are discussed in a civil manner… and this forum is a strictly moderated. :onpatrol:

Real troublemakers don’t get to stay here too long….Ok, maybe a couple do….but you know what I’m saying….😃

I won’t stop defending my Catholic faith but my New Years resolution, is to try to be more charitable, more forgiving and to show more patients to all of my friends here, Protestants and Catholics. This includes my friends who I may disagree with.

I do think that at times, we do get way too serious around here and I’m guilty myself of this.

I’m trying though…:o

Now I have to leave and go to my happy place….

Ha!
On a few threads on this sub-forum I have said I’d leave because my faith was being attacked, while I was being civil and trying to hold a conversation.
But you guys are great! I’ve been trying to be more charitable too. Seriousness is OK, but not when we get hurtful! 😃

Jimmy B,
It is good that your shoulders are broad because you bear the brunt of some hate on here. Both from Catholics and non-Catholics. If anyone is honest, however, even those who do not like to discuss with you should admire your dedication to your faith.

I have learned from you.

I agree! 👍

And Ralph, I have noticed how you hold your point of view tightly, and take your faith seriously, but can still be charitable. I greatly respect that.

My baptist grandmother always said that when you fight fire with fire, all that you have left is ash.

I like this site because the posters seem to be more knowledgeable than some others. Discussion based on emotion is hard to do.

You can generally tell when I am losing my cool. I will quit posting on a thread. Only twice have I put someone on my banned list, and both of them deserved it. 😛

I will, at times, be the charity police. I do not like the job.

If anything, I tend to be attacked for being too kind to non-Catholics. I have also caught stuff for agreeing with them over Catholics when the Catholic was wrong.

I also quit posting when I miss a few days.

You people move to fast sometimes 😃

Thank you for the kind words.

You ought to read some of my PM’s…

I am a little rough around the edges… always have been and I am blunt, but I am usually polite.

Although, in over four years and 3000+ posts here, I have unfortunately, stepped over the line a couple times and I’m sorry for doing so.

Everybody has a bad day, I guess.

I’m very direct and I am usually running in the “grey area” and do “vigorously” defend my Catholic Faith, so as a result, I do draw some negative attention, at times and that’s my fault.

Additionally, it is hard to know a person’s tone or intent, when things are reduced to writing, and this is especially true, if someone has already decided that don’t like you; I’m trying hard to prevent negative responses…

That last few posts here were very nice and they made my day, thanks again!

God Bless.
