A Catholic co-worker told me that Muhammed’s being tormented in hell. AND, with each new soul that follows his deceptions and becomes a Moslem, his torment is increased.

Is this a proper understanding as per RCC teachings?

Do any other churches teach this?

No, this is not a teaching of the Church.

In Dante’s Inferno, Mohammed is having his entrails repeatedly ripped out of him, but I don’t recall a mention of his torment increasing with each new Muslim. Where did your co-worker get this idea?

It has been almost 20 years since I read that book- before any real interest or knowledge of Mohamedism and that doesn’t ring a bell. Do you recall what level of hell he is in?

In the Eighth Circle (“simple fraud”), which as you may remember is divided into many smaller “ditches.” Muhammad is in the ditch of the “schismatics” (most of the people we would think of as heretics or false religious leaders are there–the circle of the “heretics,” which is Circle Six if I remember correctly, seems to contain mostly people we would think of as “unbelievers” or skeptics). People in that ditch are eternally dismembered, just as they dismembered the Church on earth.

(Back at the time of the Rushdie fatwa, some zealous Muslims, perhaps frustrated that they couldn’t get at Rushdie, threatened to blow up Dante’s tomb as retaliation for this passage in the Inferno.)

Both this and the opinion mentioned in the OP are surely not excluded by any teaching of the Catholic Church, although presumably it is pious and charitable to hope that Muhammad erred in ignorance and that he may have been saved.

Although the church is able to canonize saints ( people who have made it to heaven) she does not guess at who is in hell.

The churches mission is to steer people away from hell towards heaven.

Just know that it takes faith, works, & perseverance to gain the beatific vision!

Peace!👍

No, that was from Dante’s Inferno. And I see our one-star-thread-rating troll is back on duty as well… :hmmm:

No.

The Church does not speculate on who is in hell. Even Judas is not officially consigned there.
