First off, I know there are rules on if and when you can receive the Eucharist multiple times on one day. I believe this is addressed in the Cannon Law document (Can 917).

My question is this though, I thought I read someplace that you must be present when the Eucharist is consecrated in order to receive it. I lead a communion service at a local jail, and I attend a different parish most of the days that I need to lead this communion service. May I receive communion at my home parish, and then also receive communion at the communion service in which I am leading? Many times at the end of the service we need to consume the remaining hosts.

Thank you,

John

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.

If you lead the communion service first, yes you can receive the Eucharist at your parish daily Mass.

If you attend Mass first, then you cannot receive again except at Mass or viaticum. A communion service is not Mass. Therefore, attending Mass first would present a problem and you would not be able to lead the communion service and do as you describe, consuming the hosts.

You need to arrange your schedule accordingly, and not attend Mass first or if it’s a scheduling issue then you would need to refrain from receiving the Eucharist at the Mass if you attend it first and then go to the jail.

Okay, so why can receive it twice if I do the communion service first and then mass but not the other way around? Am I not participating in both services (I guess I’m confused by the word participate).

Yes, you can do the communion service first and then attend Mass, but not the other way around.

You participate in the Mass.

It means the same as attend Mass, i.e. be present, recite the prayers, etc. Not just in the building or walking in at communion time, but actually attending the mass.

It doesn’t mean that you are doing any special role.

I receive two times every Sunday at 9AM and 11AM Mass as I’m an usher.

So since I am the Eucharistic minister and leading the prayer service, what am I to do if I have hosts that need to be consumed at the end of the communion service? The church is locked up before the prayer service ends, so they would have to sit in my home over night, which I would think would be a not so good thing. I think what I am reading into this is I can’t receive communion in the AM when at mass with my family but have to wait until evening when I am at the Jail.

You should discuss it with your pastor or whatever priest is supervising the jail ministry and communion service. There are specific rules for communion services and consuming hosts.

What I can tell you is that if you receive twice in one day, the second time must be at Mass. You make your plans accordingly.

There may be another option. Could you not have one or two of the inmates who have received Communion help you consume the rest of the Hosts?

This is not a question for the Internet. Consult the priest who gave you the training for your jail ministry - he will have the correct answer for your situation.
