I’m getting back into my faith and recently bought a Brown Scapular and for the first time have been able to wear one for long periods of time (I’m normally terrible with wearing necklaces and things of that nature).

Anyways, doing research on scapulars lately, I really like the Green Scapular for conversion and would like to wear one. I was wondering, does anyone wear multiple scapulars? I know the five fold scapular is a thing, but I think it’s too much and each individual one will lose its meaning.

So is it odd to wear 2 scapulars or should I just stick to one (and decide which one I prefer)?

I prefer the medals, but some people are sticklers for the cloth scapulars.

i wear the brown scapular only

i own a green one, but it is wrapped in plastic and part of my home marian shrine

I do the same, Brian. Just the traditionalist coing out in me I guess. 😃

The Green Scapular can be carried in your purse and wallet and the prayer said daily. I have a blessed one in my car and it reminds me to pray the prayer that is on it. It can be given to others or placed under a mattress. I placed it under a mattress for my husband, now deceased, and prayed for him for many years.

A few months before his death he went to confession, after 40 years of not going, and was very joyful about it!

The Brown Scapular of our Lady of Mount Carmel is worn for consecration to our Blessed Mother. It can be replaced with the Scapular medal. Many times the Brown Scapular is sold with pictures of saints on it, and people think it is a scapular of that particular saint. It can be plain brown with no adornment, as it is a miniature “habit” of the Carmelite order.

Here is the latest catechesis on the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel from both branches of the Carmelite Order:

May our Lord Jesus Christ bless you, and our Blessed Mother draw you closer to her Son!

You can wear multiple, just prepare to pray often to Our Lady under the title of Undoer of Knots!

No, I don’t think it’s odd at all. if you wish to wear the two scapulars, then fear not. There could be no harm in doing so.

A typical scapular has two parts and strings connecting them which mimics the habit of the order. Some of the sacramentals are badges and are not connected with an order, such as the Green Badge of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (1840, approved in 1863). Another sacramental with both the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary was created by the Vicentians (approved in 1847) called the Red Scapular. Interestingly there are three different approved sacramentals that arose from members of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul:
  • Miraculous Medal to St. Catherine Laboure, Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Nov. 27, 1830.
  • Green Scapular of the Immaculate Heart of Mary revealed to Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, September 8, 1840.
  • Red Scapular of the Passion of Our Lord and the Sacred Hearts and Jesus and Mary revealed to Sister Appoline Andriveau, Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, from 26 July 1846 to 14 September 1846.
I wear the fivefold. Four of these five scapulars has a confraternity enrollment and certain prayers that are done in accord with the tradition of each. For example, with the fivefold:

White: Trinitarian
Black: Servite
Black/Brown: Carmelite
Blue: Marian, Theatine, and originally Conceptionist
Red: Vicentian

I wear a cloth green one, and recently I started wearing a 5-fold cloth scapular. I have yet to be enrolled in the 5-fold scapular though. At some point I may consider getting a medal that will represent all the scapulars.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Most Blessed and immaculate Virgin, ornament and splendor of Mount Carmel, thou who regardest with particular goodness those who wear thy scapular, benignly look upon me also, and cover me with the mantle of thy maternal protections. Fortify my weakness with thy strength, illuminate the darkness of my mind with thy wisdom, increase Faith, Hope and Charity within me, adorn my soul with the graces and virtues that it may be always precious to thee and thy divine Son; assist me in life, console me at the hour of death with thy most loving presence and present me to the most august Trinity as thy son and devout servant, to eternally praise and bless thee in heaven. Amen. Hail Mary, twice; Glory, once.

Thank you so much!!

I have the green one and the Red Scapular of the Passion and the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. I will alternate wearing them. I have thought about getting a metal one, but I sort of like the wool ones as from time to time, they will itch and it causes me to remember that I am wearing them and keeping me prayerful.

God bless!
