I hate to complain, but lately I have become very disappointed in the music they are playing at my church. God forgive me if I’m wrong, but it’s almost as if they are using the Mass to try to showcase the cantor and choir, and pianist/organist. They have begun using really showy and awkward sounding music for the Gloria, Allelujah, the Amen, Our Father, and the Agnus Dei. They’ve added so many syllables to the Our Father, plus with this new music, it feels like it takes 15 minutes to pray the Our Father. What really has got me upset is that yesterday at the 4:00 PM Mass, they actually added a phrase to the end of the Our Father (after “for the kingdom…” part). I was so shocked I couldn’t even determine what was said; I just knew something was wrong. Sometimes it sounds as if Jerry Lee Lewis is on the piano. Not only is it this new sounding music, but they have gotten stuck on the same few hymns. Lately their favorite has been “Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is Calling”. In the last year or so, the only time the music has sounded like it belongs in a Catholic Church has been Advent and Lent, because of this I’m always sad to see these seasons end. Why do you think some people feel the need to tamper with the music?
